ROLE POSITIONING AND OBJECTIVES
The roles responsibilities cover British American Tobacco (BAT)s operations in South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and eSwatini (collectively referred to as SA&BLNS). It supports the Senior Tax Manager with tax compliance in the BAT SA&BLNS entities, and for advising the business on tax-related matters across its operations in these markets, as well as in all elements of direct taxes, being corporate income tax, transfer pricing, withholding taxes. The role is also expected to support the business in Revenue Authority activity relating to employees tax matters.
What You Will Be Accountable For
Corporate Tax Compliance
- Completion of all corporate tax returns, including maintaining schedules for tax sensitive accounts;
- Preparation of provisional tax calculations and returns;
- Initiating provisional and other tax payments, as required;
- Completion of dividends tax returns, collecting withholding tax (WHT) certificates and calculating available WHT relief;
- Ensuring the availability of up-to-date tax compliance status certificates.
- Preparation of monthly current tax, deferred tax, and tax cash flow forecasts;
- Preparation of monthly year-to-date current tax and deferred tax charge calculations and journals;
- Preparation of tax note disclosures in the Annual Financial Statements;
- Completing BAT Group reporting templates, including quarterly, half-year, P10 and year-end additional disclosure schedules;
- For the main operating entity in SA, ensuring Sox compliance following established processes and procedures;
- Annual transfer pricing data collection, including financial data and supporting documentation which will enable BATs Tax Centre of Excellence to prepare transfer pricing reports;
- Data collection and process management for transfer pricing validation processes; and
- Proactive preparation of TP defence files.
- Ensuring WHT compliance through collection and issuance of WHT certificates, including ensuring correct and timely issuing of WHT certificates; and
- Completion and submission of WHT returns, and initiation of payments, as required.
- End-to-end management of Revenue Authority queries, requests for information, verifications, audits, and disputes to mitigate exposures by following established processes and procedures; and
- Assisting the Senior Tax Manager in managing the dispute/appeal/litigation process.
- Staying abreast of new tax legislation, assessing the impact on BAT entities, and preparing for, and facilitating, regular tax technical meetings and bi-annual Tax Committee meetings;
- Assisting with the collection of information and preparation of responses for internal and external audits and other ad hoc tax queries; and
- Assist the Senior Tax manager driving corporate simplification initiatives and other tax and business projects.
- Monitoring and ensuring compliance with PWCs Smart Suite tool;
- Assisting with direct tax function budget processes; and
- Maintaining BAT entities profiles on relevant Revenue Authority e-filing systems.
- Degree educated with professional accountancy/legal and/or tax qualifications;
- Minimum of three years experience in a corporate environment, preferably fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) or similar environment, with exposure to tax, including an audit firm;
- Excellent corporate tax technical knowledge (including deferred tax);
- A thorough understanding and knowledge of financial management and systems generally;
- Medium to advanced knowledge of the following software packages Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word;
- Assertiveness and drive;
- Excellent project- and time-management skills;
- Attention to detail;
- Ability to work effectively with members of other teams, as well as external parties; and
- Good communication skills
- H.Dip Tax or equivalent qualification
- Rational decision making
- Take the initiative when required
- Effective working relationships with tax authorities
- General knowledge of the SAP software package
