The Wits School of Educations Curriculum and Social Studies Division is seeking to appoint a suitable History Education candidate at Associate Lecturer level to contribute to the Schools Initial Teacher Education and postgraduate programmes. The suitable candidate will be expected to lecture at undergraduate level while completing their PhD that will contribute to the advancement of debates in History Education in South Africa. The associate lecturer will be expected to teach History content linked to the current school curriculum, (including but not limited to histories of land in South Africa, histories of colonialism and apartheid in South Africa, and Ancient African civilizations, as well as Independent Africa) and but also to move beyond the curriculum and model a pedagogy that will assist students in taking the History knowledge gained in tertiary classrooms into school classrooms. The associate lecturer will be required to assume co-ordination of undergraduate courses. This includes being able to develop physical and digital teaching and learning materials and curricula. The successful applicant will build a research profile in salient growing areas of History Education, thinking across either or both tertiary and secondary History education spaces. In addition, successful candidates will be encouraged to collaborate in areas of teachers content knowledge and their pedagogical skills, integration of knowledge and skills to enhance teaching and prepare pre-service teachers to fulfil their roles as a classroom teacher in the varying contexts of South African classrooms.

Brief Description

ASSOCIATE LECTURER
  • A PhD candidate in History or History Education (evidence of PhD Candidature is a requirement)
  • Evidence of research and knowledge of History as a school subject
  • A professional teaching degree (B Ed/PGCE/PG Dip HE)
  • At least one year applicable practical, teaching and research experience in schools and/or University.
  • Ability to communicate complex or conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding of History content and History teaching concepts.
  • Evidence of teaching at university level as a tutor is essential.
  • Preference will be given to suitably qualified candidates from designated groups as defined in the Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Teaching on undergraduate History Education courses
  • Develop research agenda, publish in accredited scholarly journals.
  • Supervision of honours students research projects to completion.
  • Contribute to the values of the school: teaching excellence, inclusivity, digital innovation, student success, etc.
  • An ability and willingness to work in teams.
