ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/ PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT AND CHAIR OF SCHOOL: SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES, LITERATURES AND CULTURES (ONE POST)

Following approval from the Executive of the University, the Faculty of Humanities is in the process of restructuring its Languages Cluster into a School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures and wishes to invite applications for the following vacancy.

The University wishes to appoint a Head of the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures who is a dynamic leader, invested in innovation and creativity in the teaching and learning, and research domains, and able to develop well-educated, well-trained and skilled graduates who are fully rounded and sensitive to their broader social contexts, locally and globally.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Leading the restructuring of the Languages Cluster into a School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (encompassing the existing Departments of African Languages; Afrikaans; Ancient and Modern Languages and Cultures; English; the Unit for Creative Writing; the Unit for Academic Literacy including the Language Centre; the Writing Centre and the Centre for Language Learning);
  • Developing and implementing a vision for the School aligned with the broader strategic goals of the Faculty of Humanities and the University (2022 2026) , including student access and success, transdisciplinarity, internationalisation and sustainability ;
  • Leading the strategic, academic and operational management of the School;
  • Planning and managing the academic and research programmes of the School and enhancing its research profile;
  • Promoting a high standard of academic education and best practice in methods of delivery;
  • Playing an active role as academic leader of the disciplines with in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures disciplines;
  • Promoting fundraising initiatives and internationalisation;
  • Recruiting and managing the staff of the School and actively supporting their continuous development;
  • Overseeing teaching and postgraduate supervision commensurate with other responsibilities;
  • Managing the Schools budget, leading and supporting fundraising activities within the School; and
  • Overseeing management of the Schools research, creative and support facilities by also working closely with other faculties and the other university platforms, e.g. the Javett-UP Art Centre; Future Africa;
Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate must:
  • Be eligible for a permanent appointment within the current Languages Cluster at the level of Associate or Full Professor;
  • Be in possession of a doctorate in any of the disciplines taught within the School;
  • Have academic leadership experience in a relevant specialisation;
  • Have proven managerial experience at a senior level;
  • Have a recognised research and publications record appropriate to the level of appointment; and
  • Have a proven record of national and international academic citizenship appropriate to the level of appointment.
Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)
  • Strong leadership and communication skills;
  • International networking and fundraising skills;
  • Ability to manage a multi-disciplinary School; and
  • An appropriate research and creative vision for the School.
Added Advantages And Preferences
  • Familiarity with the academic disciplines in the School; and
  • An NRF Rating.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbents level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

The academic appointment as Associate Professor or Professor is a permanent appointment; however the headship of the School is a fixed-term renewable appointment of four years.
