ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT (ONE POST)

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- The strategic and operational management of the Department;
- Planning and managing the academic and research programmes of the Department;
- Promoting academic excellence in teaching and research;
- Recruiting and managing staff of the Department and promoting their continuous development;
- Managing the Departments budget and raising funds for departmental activities, including operating of contract laboratories;
- Aligning the vision and programme of the Department with the broader vision of the Faculty and the University;
- Providing and/or facilitating mentorship of young academics in the Department;
- Offering leadership in transformation initiatives.
- PhD in Microbiology, Immunology, Parasitology or Epidemiology or similar field in veterinary tropical diseases;
- Recognised academic status in infectious and/or parasitic diseases through research and publication record;
- Experience in managing academic, research and technical support staff;
- Strong leadership and excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills;
- Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholder and professional bodies;
- Experience in grantmanship and management of contract studies.
- A BVSc, BVMCh or equivalent veterinary degree will be an advantage;
- Managerial experience at a tertiary, research or diagnostic institution;
- National Research Foundation (NRF) rating as a research scientist.

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term if they are available for appointment.
