Summary

The Government Wide direct hire authority for Biology is being used to fill this position.

This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

DutiesAs a Biologist within the Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
  • Sagebrush ecosystem research for land managers and publication in scientific journals.
  • Plan studies for the grouse species.
  • Plan, capture, tag with tracking devices and activities associated with wildlife in the sagebrush ecosystem.
  • Map seasonal habitats and connectivity for sage-grouse using telemetry data.
  • Develop supporting vegetation maps for the seasonal habitats; mapping sagebrush and other species such as yellow sweet clover with remotely sensed data from aerial and satellite platforms.
  • Evaluate wildlife responses to energy development, particularly pronghorn movement and resource selection around wind turbines.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of habitat restoration treatments and their effects on invasive annual grasses in sagebrush and grassland ecosystems.
  • Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.
Physical Demands: The field work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or

rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Laboratory work requires moderate physical ability and agility and dexterity to manipulate samples and operate equipment.

Work Environment: Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.RequirementsConditions of EmploymentKey Requirements:

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • Driver's License/Driving Record - You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
  • Pre-Employment Medical - Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
  • A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.
  • Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. *OR* B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
For GS-12

In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level.

Examples Of Experience At The GS-11 Level May Include
  • Plan and execute wildlife tracking studies, particularly for grouse species and various ungulates.
  • Conduct sampling, statistical analyses and biometrics relative to animal movement and ecology.
  • Enter and maintain geospatial and biological data into various databases; verify data accuracy.
  • Characterize animal movement and habitat use from VHF and GPS-tracking data.
  • Evaluate vegetation dynamics using field surveys and remotely sensed data.
  • Summarize and report research results to support scientific publications, reports, or presentations.
