JOB PURPOSE
The purpose of this job, working closely with the Heads of the Market Theatre Laboratory and Market Photo Workshop and reporting to the Fundraising & Stakeholder Relationships Manager, is to identify, strategize and procure funding opportunities for bursaries, scholarships and academic residencies, seminars, colloquiums, research, productions and academic publications at the two divisions of the Market Theatre Foundation.
Key Job Responsibilities:
Planning & Strategy:
■ Develop an annual fundraising action plan and through proactive fundraising efforts contribute to the development of annual bursaries budget for the schools by:
- Managing, supporting and developing imaginative fundraising activities, some of which should be events-based
- Inspiring new supporters to contribute money, while maintaining and developing relationships with existing supporters to develop and broaden support for student fees.
- Developing and coordinating web-based fundraising including on social media and through public fundraising opportunities and activities
- Identifying fundraising opportunities from both local and international spaces
- Developing income generation through offering units’ courses and curriculum products to relevant institutions and government departments
- Delivering presentations to interested groups and attending events to network with potential sponsors and grant-makers.
- Develop and maintain an active database of Market Theatre Laboratory and Market Photo Workshop alumni.
Administration:
- Compilation of data, reconciliation of funds raised and allocated as bursaries, research and presentation of status/annual reports to donors.
- Coordination of student bursary contracts with donors
- Contribute to bid writing for grant/trust applications
- Maintain and update database of fundraising contacts
- Research, identify and manage small to medium-sized donations from trusts, foundations, institutional funders, governments and statutory-making bodies, corporate and private donors.
- Arrange and book campus visits for both active and potential donors.
Reporting:
- Reporting to the Fundraising & Stakeholder Relationship Manager all records relating to fundraising and proposed fundraising events.
- Follow up on academic progress of bursary recipients for reporting purposes.
- Develop comprehensive reports as required for donors and MTF council
Key Competence Requirements:
Education, Knowledge and Experience:
■ Grade 12 (Matric)
■ A bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, English, fundraising or journalism
■ A thorough knowledge of the arts sector, with at least 5 years’ proven experience in the fundraising sector
■ Preferably at least 1 year of working in an academic environment with a specific focus on alumni management, fundraising and institutional advancement
■ A strong network of relationships with funders, embassies and foundations; and an ability to identify opportunities in the Corporate Social Responsibility sector
■ An understanding of the role and contribution of volunteers in the work of a voluntary organization
■ Experience/knowledge of grant applications
■ Experience of a wide range of communication methods including press and social media
Personal Attributes and Skills:
■ The incumbent must be able to develop strategic proposals and write reports effectively.
■ A commitment to work towards strict deadlines is a necessity.
■ The ability to translate artistic concepts into proposals is required.
■ The incumbent must have proven experience in fundraising.
■ An understanding of the role and contribution of volunteers in the work of a voluntary organization
■ Good communication skills (flexible, clear, concise)
■ Excellent presentation skills
■ Good administration skills
■ Strong IT/computer skills including Word, Excel and Outlook
■ Attention to detail
■ Word and excel at intermediate level
■ Understand and speak more than one South African official language
