Dynamic Earth Solutions (DES) specializes in site planning, spatial information and digital terrain modeling, surface and subsurface investigations, rock mechanics, underground structures, geotechnical laboratory services, flood forecasting and water resource management through our geotechnical, hydrotechnical, and civil site development expertise.
The Lead Civil Engineer will be part of an engineering team providing engineering services to large and small projects.
The Lead Civil Engineer provides support to the Engineering Manager and is responsible for supervising a team of civil, hydrotechnical and geotechnical engineers, designers, draftspersons and GIS analysts.
The Lead Civil Engineer provides leadership and assists in the resolution of all technical issues related to the discipline.
The Lead Civil Engineer may participate in a wide range of projects that may cover mine and industrial development, earthworks, road and rail design and associated bridges, airstrips, villages, marine terminals, utilities including pump stations, dams, drainage and permanent way layouts for both front end planning and the detailed engineering phase for multi-discipline projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Engineering Manager with the delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope, quantities, cost and schedule
- Prepare Engineering Work Packages (EWPs) in consultation with the Engineering Manager
- Assign work tasks (via signed off EWPs) to individuals and continuously monitor progress and quality
- Develop the civil manpower schedule to be part of the engineering and project schedule in conjunction with the other disciplines
- Develop the civil work plan for insertion into the project specific execution plan
- Develop and maintain the project scope of work documentation (Facilities Description Report) and revise as required during the design evolution
- Assist in the compilation and delivery of monthly engineering status reports
- Participate in and contribute to design reviews
- Represent the discipline in the project engineering coordination meetings
- Provide and/or coordinate training for resources assigned to the project
- Prepare and/or review project procedures, standard specifications and design criteria
- Review and evaluate technical work prepared by junior engineers, intermediate engineers, designers, technicians and technologists
- Ensure relevant technical experts are involved in the design process as required and facilitate the sharing of technical expertise both across projects and other Hatch offices
- Perform conceptual and detailed engineering design
- Prepare engineering calculations where required
- Prepare technical specifications where required
- Prepare and contribute to technical memos and reports, within areas of expertise
- Provide input to engineering, operating and capital cost estimates
- Sign documents and drawings as required
- Undertake construction supervision and management dependent upon project demands
- Support of site engineering team to provide technical solutions and timely response to technical queries
- Work to ensure the implementation of safety in design and integrity principles in design documentation
- Provide input to the closeout report.
Qualifications and Experience
- A recognized degree in civil engineering from an accredited university
- Professional Engineer registered with Engineering Council of South Africa, Saudi Arabia or other relevant country registration
- 15+ years experience in relevant civil engineering design and management
- Ability to manage and delegate to individuals to attain quality, cost and schedule objectives
- Experience with working on projects in a multi-disciplinary environment
- Sound understanding of design engineering codes and technical standards
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Good planning and organizational skills
- Ability to function with minimal supervision
