In common with other NHS Boards in Scotland, NHS Orkney is required to provide routine and urgent care for patients of all ages. We have the infrastructure to be able to respond to life threatening emergencies, and are able to triage, treat and stabilise whilst waiting for emergency retrieval services to transport patients to a more appropriate care setting on the mainland.
We are looking for enthusiastic SHOs, who are keen to experience the rewards and challenges of Remote and Rural Medicine in an island setting. It is an opportunity to work as part of a small and friendly clinical team in our modern, newly built healthcare facility. We have a Consultant led service, providing inpatient care for medical, surgical and a small number of paediatric patients. We also have an Assessment and Rehabilitation ward, a Maternity Unit and Macmillan House in addition to Day Surgery/theatre. Our Emergency Department sees a broad spectrum of both minor and major casualties and also acts as our assessment unit for all GP referrals. Presentations are extremely varied and provide excellent experience in holistic and realistic medicine.
This is an opportunity to further develop clinical skills and independent working in a supportive environment.
Educational Opportunities
- Weekly Mortality and Morbidity/Clinical educational meeting.
- Weekly Simulated Scenario Training throughout the hospital.
- ALS course on island February and September each year.
- Single shared Accommodation Available
- Opportunity to undertake QIA/audit for annual appraisal.
- Annual appraisal provided on island
With views as far as the eyes can see, stunning beaches and miles-upon-miles of coastline, youll always find your own space in Orkney. With this, it is no surprise that Orkney has been voted the best place to live in Scotland for eight years running. Orkney has several flights a day to Scotlands largest airports, so you wont feel isolated here. Very low crime levels and a strong sense of community make Orkney a safe and secure environment for all ages too. And the best bit is there being very little traffic anywhere your daily commute will be almost non-existent!
