We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Centurion, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

Job Description

The Manager Corporate Affairs Northern Cape Hub will report to the Senior General Manager Northern Cape

The main responsibilities will include but not limited to:
  • Assess the consistent application of Safety and health principles in Corporate Affairs interactions and take personal responsibility for the safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and the elimination of fatalities.
  • Act as a role model and reinforce a workplace culture where safety and health for the site are paramount.
  • Provide an environment for on-site discipline to challenge and act on unsafe behaviours without repercussions.
  • Consider safety and health impacts for neighbourhood communities during decision-making within the discipline.
  • Refine Corporate Affairs specific plans/systems to reduce exposure to discipline-specific risks:
  • Design and approve operational risk management systems to assess critical risks and monitor the effectiveness of critical controls within the discipline.
  • Identify PUEs and monitor critical control performance within the discipline.
  • Ensure teams under management embed critical controls into daily work practices.
  • Assess and ensure effectiveness of Safety & Health systems in Corporate Affairs disciplines:
  • Assess the safety leadership capabilities of direct reports and the capability potential of the broader team.
  • Monitor all Corporate Affairs teams' compliance with safety requirements in line with the Operating Model workflow.
  • Engage in physical safety checks, interventions, and coaching.
  • Implement KPIs, analyse discipline safety data, and address gaps within their teams.
  • Direct continual internal safety audits to meet all safety requirements.
  • Co-ordinate site visits by internal and external visitors to ensure adherence to site safety systems (including induction).
  • Establish a system to monitor any KIO implementation projects and work with team members to correct any variations in Public Affairs.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to drive stakeholder relations activities related to communities and social investment opportunities.
  • Ensure adherence to statutory, corporate, and social development principles.
  • Identify cross-functional interdependencies with multi-disciplinary functions.
  • Assist in developing and implementing stakeholder/community management plans and drive effective stakeholder engagement.
  • Collaborate, manage, and apply recommended processes to roll out community and Stakeholder Engagement Plans.
  • Conduct a stakeholder perception audit and develop adequate improvement plans.
  • Monitor, anticipate and prepare the operation to constructively respond to changes in the external environment (political, environmental & legislative).
  • Consult with and coordinate stakeholder engagement teams.
  • Manage and implement stakeholder enhancement and engagement projects
  • Stakeholder issues monitoring and management.
  • Facilitate internal and external stakeholder relationships across business.
  • Provide senior management with specialised communication support, manage the operations crisis communication system and function as corporate spokesperson.
  • Analyze the external and internal environment to identify key business issues requiring communication intervention and develop suitable responses in partnership with key stakeholders.
  • Facilitate and maintain an integrated network of effective internal and external communication channels.
  • Develop and communicate messages to ensure a positive image of the company brand.
  • Maintaining relationships with the community to keep them informed and obtain their preferences and consent to support the project.
  • Identify outreach meetings with local community members to discover their issues and concerns.
  • Support senior management in external and internal communication, incl. adverts, speeches, news releases
  • Assess communication governance and implement improvement actions.
  • Clarify any misunderstanding with the external public through local media.
  • Publicize the company's developmental interventions in local communities to enhance the brand of the company
  • Manage the organisation of events.
  • Develop crisis communication processes.
  • Optimizes the community liaison processes within the Northern Cape area.
  • Manage the feedback process on social performance, stakeholder engagement, communication, and permitting concerns and priorities with the view of revising.
  • intervention strategies where necessary.
  • Liaise and support the Strategic business critical projects occurring in social surrounding areas.
  • Act as a positive representation of the business to the community.
  • Develop and foster relationships with the community, stakeholders, and other entities.
  • Manage departmental delivery per the sustainable mine plan and social performance.
  • Co-create a purpose-led, high-performing culture within the Corporate Affairs discipline that aligns with the company values, is inclusive, and promotes diversity.
  • Act as a role model and actively engage as a team member in all team processes.
  • Implement effective team leader and team member processes. Set clear and consistent expectations, encourage teams to challenge the status quo and strive for improvements.
  • Ensure that the discipline-specific systems, symbols and behaviours reinforce the desired culture and align with Anglo American values.
  • Communicate the operation's goals and direction, making it digestible for the teams and communicating across teams.
  • Assess effective employee & contractor management processes within Corporate Affairs:
  • Ensure individuals and teams have the authority and resources (time, people, and budget) to perform their tasks in line with the nature/complexity of work and industry benchmarks on efficiency.
  • Hold individuals within the discipline to account in line with their role authority and accountability structures.
  • Drive people development within the discipline:
  • Ensure all members within the discipline have the knowledge and skills to perform their roles.
  • Identify knowledge and skill gaps and provide development activities and coaching.
  • Embed team leader and team member processes through the Team + tool, ensuring performance requirements and achievements are known.
  • Engage in local dispute resolution with employee representative bodies as relevant to discipline and escalate as required.
  • Lead compliance of the discipline with external (legislative, regulatory, permitting) local requirements as a minimum level of site performance for communication and branding, stakeholder engagement, social performance and permitting.
  • Ensure compliance with Anglo American Social Way (version 3), Anglo American Minimum Permitting Requirements, Anglo American Communication and Branding, and Stakeholder Engagement protocols within operations and stay-in-business projects.
  • Tailor and embed controls/accountabilities to ensure Public Affairs collaborates effectively with other disciplines to monitor and manage regulatory compliance (including licensing and permitting).
  • Provide input to projects in areas of regulatory compliance risk relative to timing and scheduling requirements.
  • Effectively manage the development of a suite of reports for the management team and Government, including:
  • Company and operation Charter Reports.
  • Continued stakeholder engagement process.
  • Conduct regular stakeholder relations health checks.
    • Develop required compliance governance for the Corporate Affairs discipline:
  • Ensure teams conduct reviews to identify and escalate non-compliance.
  • Ensure systems are in place to monitor compliance and manage non-compliance.
  • Ensure preliminary audit to ensure that scope is well defined and resources are allocated.
  • Allocate clear, appropriate accountabilities within the discipline and monitor overdue actions.
  • Conduct close-outs within the discipline to ensure understanding of review findings and challenges
  • Implement actions to ensure compliance.
  • Visit sites of high severity and high potential incidents as part of the investigation.
  • Allocate resources to conduct a high-quality investigation.
  • Follow the appropriate process and establish the root cause.
  • Ensure proper and timely escalation and reporting to GM.
  • Attend close-out and ensure implementation of learnings.
  • Ensure sharing of learnings within the discipline through appropriate channels across the site as required.
This role is in Corporate Affairs (COR) department on a band 5.14 level

Qualifications
  • Relevant Honours Degree in Social Science: Development Studies/Public Administration / Community Relations on NQF8
  • Masters Degree (NQF9) Advantageous
  • SA Drivers Licence
Technical Knowledge
  • In-depth knowledge of social performance, communication, and stakeholder engagement within the mining industry, supported by 8-10 years of relevant experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of key social value drivers across the site value chain and the interdependence of essential levers.
  • Knowledge of social performance drivers in the community and their impact on business performance.
  • Proficiency in relationship management and the ability to nurture beneficial business relationships.
  • Knowledge of Social Performance, Communication Stakeholder Engagement, and Permitting legislative, statutory, and regulatory requirements.
