Economist: Trade, regional integration and industrial policy (Pretoria or Cape Town)

DNA is well established as a leading provider of trade and industrial policy analysis and advice to government, multi-lateral institutions, the private sector and donors in Southern Africa. We apply the latest quantitative and qualitative economic techniques to assess the outcomes of trade and industrial policy interventions at the regional, national, firm and household levels.

Your role
We are currently looking for an economist to join our full-time team. Applicants should have a keen interest in trade and/or industrial policy issues and should have demonstrated experience in at least one of the following areas:
  • Trade modelling or data analysis.
  • Value chain analysis.
  • Cost benefit analysis.
  • Trade or industrial policy analysis.
  •  Country, industry, and sector-specific case studies.
The successful candidate will be responsible for analysing and researching economic issues in the trade, regional integration and industrial policy thematic areas. You will be working with government agencies, international organisations, and the private sector to provide expert advice and policy recommendations.

Key responsibilities will include:
  •  Analysing domestic and international trade policies, agreements, and regulations, to assess their impact on the economy, industries, and businesses.
  • Conducting research and data analysis to identify market trends and patterns in specific industries and to identify opportunities for growth.
  •  Developing and proposing policy recommendations to improve economic growth and competitiveness in specific industries and for businesses.
  • Collaborating with other economists, policymakers, and industry experts to develop and implement policies and strategies that promote economic growth and development.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, such as government agencies, international organisations, and the private sector, to ensure the delivery of timely and relevant economic analysis and advice.
  • Communicating research findings and policy recommendations to a range of audiences, including policymakers, business leaders, and the public.
  • Staying up to date on economic trends, policies, and research in the field of trade, regional integration and industrial policy.
The successful candidate will be based in our office in Pretoria or may, by agreement, work from Cape Town.

Job Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered:
  • A masters degree, ideally in economics, but DNA will also consider post-graduate degrees in statistics, development studies, and other social science masters degrees with a strong quantitative component.
  • At least 2 years of trade or industrial policy research or consulting experience (more experienced candidates will be considered).
  • Experience in applying quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in MS Office Applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Willing to travel in South Africa and sub Saharan Africa.
  • Eligibility to work in South Africa.
