Our client is one of the worlds largest producers and marketers of copper, with mining operations and development projects in key mining regions of Africa, Australia and America. They operate on a large-scale copper and cobalt deposits, both open pit and underground, with high-grade mineral reserves.
The Role
The primary purpose of the Engineering Lead role is to provide technical leadership and oversight for engineering activities. The Engineering Lead is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient execution of engineering projects, optimizing operational processes, and providing technical guidance to support our mining activities.
The position will be based in Johannesburg South Africa, with regular travel to the DRC.
Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee engineering projects, ensuring adherence to project specifications, quality standards, and safety regulations.
- Support the project managers to provide oversight of consultants and scope of work to support the project delivery.
- A specific plan for meeting project objectives and prime contract requirements.
- Provide independent view on project technical deliverables, constructability and safety in design and construction management (incl. HSEC considerations) when supporting Project Managers during studies, and if required, construction.
- Optimize engineering processes and operational efficiencies through the application of engineering principles.
- Provide technical guidance and support to engineering teams, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement engineering strategies aligned with organizational goals.
- Ensure compliance with relevant mining regulations and industry best practices.

- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field. A master's degree is advantageous.
- More than 10 years of experience in engineering, with progressive levels of responsibility.
- Proven track record in leading and managing engineering projects within the mining industry.
- Strong understanding of all phases of mining and processing projects and operations, including planning, design, and optimization.
- Proficient in engineering principles, practices, and standards.
- Strong technical knowledge of mining projects and their development.
- Excellent project management skills, including planning, execution, and monitoring.
- Ability to analyse and interpret technical data and make informed decisions.
- Effective leadership and team management abilities to motivate and guide engineering teams.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
- Demonstrated delivery of projects in difficult geographies.
- Semi-autonomous, self-motivated, highly pro-active, and resilient attitude.
