Farm Supervisor - Kolomela Mine

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Centurion, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

Job Description

As a Farm Supervisor Kolomela Mine, you will provide services as required and your responsibilities will include but not limited to:
  • The management and implementation of the Cattle breeding program focussing on optimizing the herd production by effectively utilizing the available grazing, managing the genetic diversity of the herd, focussing on fertility of the core breeding herd and implementation of a robust animal health management program. Saleable animals must then be marketed to optimise the income of the Land Management program.
  • The management and implementation of the Game breeding program focussing on optimizing production by effectively utilizing the available grazing and browsing, managing the genetic diversity of the different breeding herds (several species and different breeding camps), focussing on superior genetic diversity of the breeding herd and implementation of a robust animal health management program. Animals must be selected for breeding, utilization and/or live sales. Saleable animals must then be marketed to optimise the income of the Land Management program. Animals identified for further breeding must be relocated if necessary. The Farm Supervisor will be responsible for all applicable permitting.
  • The management and implementation of applicable off-set and conservation programs focussing on achieving the overall goals and objectives as set out within the programs. This will include the daily management of the game reserves as established under this program.
  • The management and implementation of the Irrigation program. This entails lucern production (hay making plough, plant, irrigate, cut, rake, bale, recover to store, fertilizing), maize production (plough, plant, irrigate, fertilize, harvest, silage), pecan production (plant, irrigate, disease control, prune, harvest, sale) and prickly pear production (plant, fertilize, irrigate, harvest for animal fodder).
  • General farm related Infrastructure construction and maintenance, i.e. Fences, Dams and water storage, Wind and solar pumps, Bomas and kraals, Security infrastructure (gates, cameras, monitors, etc.), Houses and accommodation, Stores and Workshops.
  • General farm related Equipment management and maintenance, i.e. Hand tools, Workshop tools, Tractors and associated implements, TLB, Grader, Trucks, LDVs, Telehandlers, Mulchers, Skidsteers, etc.
  • The management of personnel (General workers, Team leaders, Artisans, Operators, Foreman, etc.) consisting of general HR functions, Safety and Health aspects (incl. the applicable legal appointment under the OHSAct) and general team dynamics so as to optimize the general performance of the labour force.
This role is in the Safety & Sustainable Development (SSD) department at a Band 7 level reporting to Section Manager, Land, Game and Agriculture.

Qualifications
  • Minimum: Diploma in Agriculture focussing on Grazing management, Cattle production, Game Farming.
  • Professional Hunter registration will be advantageous.
  • Valid hunting rifle license.
  • Minimum code EC1 drivers license with valid PDP.
Experience
  • At least 5 years experience in Cattle farming.
  • At least 5 years experience in Game farming.
  • Knowledge of irrigation management Lucern, Maize and Pecan nut production (Hay making, silage making and pecan harvesting).
  • Knowledge of and experience in hospitality will be advantageous.
  • Medically fit.
