Consultant Gastroenterologist

Job Summary

This is an appointment to the Gastroenterology Department in the Specialist Medicine Directorate, which provides clinical services at both the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospital sites. These 2 posts will be joining a department of 8 other gastroenterologists in the Trust. The new consultant will have responsibilities for helping deliver a first class service. In addition, the post holder will support the general medicine services at the Tunbridge Wells Hospital site.

Main duties of the job

The posts will join 8 other Consultants in the management of patients on the Gastroenterology Ward at TWH (Ward 12) as part of the Gastroenterologist of the Week 9am - 5pm weekday model.

In addition, the post will join the consultant GI bleed service which has 24/7 endoscopy access. The GI bleed on-call consultant at the weekend will provide Saturday and Sunday morning Gastroenterology ward rounds and cover for the 24/7 GI bleeds.

About Us

The Trust was formed in April 2000 by the merger of the Mid Kent Healthcare Trust and the Kent & Sussex Weald NHS Trust. It provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 1/2 million in West Kent and North East Sussex, and Specialist Cancer services to a considerably larger population. Its major hospitals are the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury and Maidstone Hospital. The Trust's Headquarters are at Maidstone Hospital. The Trust's Chairman is Mr David Highton, the Chief Executive is Mr Miles Scott and the Medical Director is Dr Peter Maskell. Clinical services are organised into nine Directorates. The chief of service is Dr Laurence Maiden, the Clinical Director for Medicine, which encompasses gastroenterology, is Dr Paul Blakerand the Lead Clinician for gastroenterology is Dr Hemant Sharma.

Job description Job responsibilities
  • To provide a high standard of care to any patient for whom you have clinical responsibility. This will include any patients referred to you and cared for by you personally or by members of your team and, in addition, any patients of consultant colleagues when you are covering for leave.
  • To participate in clinical and other service activities and developments with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care across the Trust.
  • To work in close co-operation with other medical, professional and managerial colleagues, both within and outside the specialty, to provide high quality health care to the Trusts patients, and to make a contribution to future thinking about the Trusts strategic direction.
  • To participate fully in the clinical governance of the specialty covering its Trust-wide activities. To attend clinical governance half-days as detailed in the Trusts Guide to Job Planning unless on agreed leave or while attending emergencies.
  • To participate actively in departmental audits, sharing co-ordination of audit activities within the department and implementation of change.
  • To take an active responsibility for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and supervision.
  • To assume responsibility, both personally and corporately with consultant colleagues, for the management of junior medical staff. You are expected to be involved in their professional development, both clinical and personal as per guidance from the Deanery.
  • To ensure that all doctors in training for whom you have supervisory responsibilities undertake delegated clinical tasks that are within their level of competence and knowledge.
  • To ensure at all times that you comply with the General Medical Councils published guide Good Medical Practice including the Duties of a Doctor.
  • To take personal responsibility for risk management in your work and undertake to review practices and learn from mistakes.
  • To provide prospective cover, for advice and to deal with clinical emergencies, during colleagues annual/study leave and for other absences as far as is practicable and clinically safe.
  • To ensure that you respond promptly and efficiently to all complaints related to any patient care you or your staff have been involved with, assisting the Trusts corporate responsibility to reply to complaints within a specified time frame.
  • To ensure that you develop and maintain effective working relationships with those agencies concerned with the provision of health and social care services and those representing the interests of patients.
  • To undertake an annual appraisal leading to a personal development plan as outlined in the Trust Appraisal Policy. You must collect and maintain sufficient evidence to support the appraisal process and your GMC revalidation. The appraisal will inform the study leave and job planning processes.
  • To undertake an annual job plan review as outlined in the Trust Guide to Job Planning.
  • You are required to take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and others who may be affected by what you do while at work. You must adhere to Trust IRMER Regulations.
  • Specialty out-patient clinics as appropriate for the post-holders special interests
  • Involvement in the development of clinical management protocols shared with the community and other consultant colleagues.
  • Participation on the management and future development of the gastroenterology service.
Qualifications

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • Registered with GMC
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • On GMC Specialist Register for G(I)M and gastroenterology (or within 6 months of CCT date)
  • Broad experience of gastroenterological medicine
Desirable
  • A higher degree such as an MD/ PHD
Further training Desirable
  • Bowel Cancer Screening Colonoscopy skills would be an advantage
  • Advanced IBD experience or interventional endoscopy, ie, ERCP
Research Essential
  • An understanding of general principles, scientific method and interpretation of literature
Desirable
  • Evidence of personal research projects and their presentation
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • GCP training
  • Experience of recruitment to portfolio and commercial clinical trials
