General Manager - Western Chrome Mines

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To give strategic guidance and to lead the Western Chrome Mines team in the safe and cost-effective execution of all production and maintenance processes ensuring high quality finished products. To develop and implement short- and long-term goals in order to achieve the required targets and to create a culture of continues improvement and operational excellence.

Balanced Scorecard Pillars, Roles And Responsibilities

SAFETY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY
  • Identify and assess level of baseline risk exposures in area of responsibility by considering exposures to business, financial, legal issues, people, equipment, material, environment, processes, etc.
  • Consider the level of risk, apply mitigation and implement control measures for residual risk (set objectives, minimum requirements, etc.)
  • Manage SHEQ compliance within the Function through effective use of the Toolbox
  • Utilise the Integrated Management System (IMS) to initiate, investigate and report SHEQ status
  • Ensure effective safety and health programs are in place to meet or exceed safety goals. Monitor key program indicators to identify periodic need for program effectiveness review and improvement
  • Ensure effective environmental programs are in place to meet or exceed compliance requirements. Monitor key program indicators to identify periodic need for program effectiveness review and improvement.
PEOPLE

Manage The Function
  • Ensure an enabling climate/culture
  • Actively promote and exhibit the practice of the Samancor Chrome values
  • Manage labour stability by minimising labour turnover
  • Labour complement in line with budget
  • Achieve HDSA/Female targets for the Function
  • Manage performance against set targets and competencies
  • Ensure IDPs are linked to performance results and implemented as per plan
  • Conduct career discussions and implement actions with all identified talent (quarterly)
  • Ensure discipline is maintained (absenteeism, lateness, overtime, misconduct, etc.)
  • Coach and counsel people to ensure improved performance levels
  • Conduct recruitment interviews

  • Ensure customer satisfaction by delivering product on-time, that meet the requirements of the customers

Reporting and Escalations
  • Evaluate performance by analysing and interpreting data and metrics
  • Provide accurate statistics and trend analysis of the mining operations
  • Provide service delivery, escalations metrics and reporting to the lead team

  • Ensure compliance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and associated permits.
  • Conducting due diligence and feasibility studies
  • Building strong working relationships and effective communication channels with key stakeholders, resolving complaints and enquiries
Knowledge
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Mine Health and Safety Act
  • Demonstrate an understanding of DMR (department of Mineral Resources) responsibilities
  • Working knowledge and experience of the chrome mining industry
  • Project planning and management
  • Major incident, problem and change management
  • Continual service and product improvement
  • Understanding of business e.g. HR, Finance, and Supply Chain etc.
  • Demonstrate good working knowledge and experience in developing and implementing strategic plans, management policies, strategies and systems.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Mining Engineering Degree
  • 10 years relevant experience, preferably 5 years managerial experience
Additional Qualifications
  • MBA would be an advantage
