Short Description / Purpose of Job
To provide geohydrology specialist input into water management at the Sasol Mining operational areas and to support business to identify and address water related risks, adhere to water related legislation and policies, and improve water management practices.
The incumbent work within the framework of the Sasol SHE game plan, and is a key input in the formulation of Environmental tactical (for Sasol Mining operational areas ) objective setting.


Recruitment Description / Key Accountabilities
  • Provide specialist input with regards to groundwater / contaminated land
  • Advise on a system is in place to monitor, measure and facilitate legal compliance and risk management
  • Ensure governance of practices for the disciplines (geohydrology) including monitoring and audits
  • Participate in the process of understanding the root cause- own the problem definition, development of solution to be handed over to the project team
  • Compare and benchmark geohydrological equipment and software applications for use at Sasol to establish the portofilio specific risks
  • Establish business specific risks through the compilation and updating of the required software models
  • Report the risk and support business to find solutions in addressing risk. Ensure models are correctly updated and interpreted
  • Specialist input and support into reducing our current environmental footprint and minimise the negative impact on people and the environment
  • Addressing environmental challenges within Sasol Mining's overall sustainability approach to mitigate business risks
  • Demonstrate One Sasol way behaviour ensure area under control is managed to the benefit to the larger Sasol value chain
  • Support the one Sasol SHE Excellence Approach and provide specialist input into portfolio specific environmental plans
  • Sustain own high performance and seek opportunities for personal growth monitored through structured performance contract and development plan
  • Establish and sustain effective relationships with relevant internal and external stakeholders (local; provincial and national levels)
  • Assess portfolio specific legal compliance status of all permits, licenses and authorizations and facilitate implementation of corrective actions/recommendations
  • Ensure that portfolio specific activities are being conducted in accordance with the one Sasol SHE Excellence Approach
  • Businesses report annually to the relevant governance structures and corporate SHE on the top SHE risks for the purpose of assurance on the effectiveness of SHE risk management
  • Act within the SHE governance and compliance framework as set by Sasol Group
  • Act upon findings from audits and assessments and take proactive measures to ensure SHE maturity and compliance
  • Assess portfolio specific legal compliance status of all permits, licenses and authorizations
  • Consult on the prevention and addressing of environmental contamination (eg land, waste and water) due to Sasol operations and associated activities
  • Specialist input and support into emergency response procedures for environmental contamination are defined and tested regularly during emergency exercises
  • Monitoring of environmental performance (water and effluent) is conducted, recorded and reported appropriately
  • Using expert knowledge, attention to detail and team dynamics to solve complex technical problems
  • Keep abreast with groundwater related challenges. Generating ideas to solve groundwater related problems and exploit opportunities from an environmental perspective to assist with effective resource uitilization and practices
  • Share expert knowledge in own team and at all other levels (e.g. COPs)
  • Responsible for UWMS and SharePoint Report data base management and data backups
  • Management of mines water chemistry data bases and backups;
  • Monthly monitoring of compartment boreholes and provide the readings to the Mine Business Planner;
  • UWMS Super User: Provide first line support and training to all UWMS users;
  • Support the mines in compiling new and or updates to their UWMS Mine Water Balances;
  • Support and advise the mines on matters of underground water management or any other issues related to mine water;
  • Each month, check the Mine Water Reports for correctness and advise if action from a mine is required before publication
  • Management of the water monitoring team.
  • Compiling high quality results water monitoring reports in support of environmental compliance to be submitted to Government Departments.
  • Responsible for the investigation of landowner complaints with regards to water
  • Close working relationship with the all the Sasol Mining operational areas as well as Mine Closure Department.


Formal Education
  • University Bacherlor's or Masters Degree Geohydrology

  • 5+ relevant years
