The Head of Investment Banking, South Africa is a senior management level position responsible for accomplishing results through the management of a team or department in an effort to raise funds in the capital markets and provide clients with strategic advisory services in coordination with the Institutional Banking team. The overall objective of this role ensure the seamless delivery of investment strategies and advisory services to our public and private clients.
This role reports to the Head of Investment Banking for the Middle East and Africa and is responsible for the following:
Responsibilities:
- Manage SA IB franchise as part of, and in co-ordination with, the overall Banking franchise
- Take coverage responsibility for a number of existing clients, in addition to acquiring new clients
- Develop strategic relationships with the Board Members, Owners, CEOs, CFOs, Business Development, Strategy Heads of clients (public and private, and including financial sponsors and government). Position Citi as a trusted advisor for investment banking services, fully conversant across regulatory, finance, governance, designated industry, product or SA coverage and complex strategic issues
- In conjunction with Banking product and industry partners, ensure best in class investment banking transaction origination and execution across products (strategic advisory, capital markets, and other as appropriate) for public and private transactions
- Develop and lead pitching/marketing strategy for the group
- Manage oversight of the SA IB business, driving client focus, governance and discipline
- Directly manage SA IB bankers within the team and indirectly manage & coach bankers with a special focus on promoting diverse talent within the team
- Partner with product and industry bankers across Banking and other business lines to formulate, implement and articulate a strategic growth plan
- Develop and expand deep investment banking coverage and capabilities across SA
- Partner with the global product, industry and regional teams to enhance cross-border co-ordination
- Manage projects to ensure business optimization and growth, execution of new initiatives, product expansion, target market initiatives, sales penetration, cross selling of client solutions across the country and coordination of decisions
- Manage, lead and develop investment banking revenue, pipeline, returns, expense, wallet and other metric targets for SA
- Drive and implement the SA IB strategy to maximise revenue, expand market share, deepen client relations and broaden product delivery
- Partner with SA Franchise and control functions such as Legal, Compliance, Risk, Audit and Finance in order to ensure appropriate governance and control infrastructure
- Participate in overall leadership of SA Franchise, including participating in various franchise related committees and forums, as appropriate
- Build a culture of respect, responsible finance, effective governance and supervision, expense discipline and ethics
- Maximize organizational execution of key initiatives and business review processes as well as drive operational and technology strategies needed to support the business growth and optimization
- Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citi, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behaviour, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.
- 15+ years of investment banking experience working in an investment banking institution(s)
- Experience in team and people management
- Detailed understanding of SA investment banking landscape, market and opportunity, including regulatory landscape, target market/clients, and participants
- Identified and existing relationships with significant proportion of the target market/clients, including relationships at C-suite, senior management and important stakeholder levels
- Consistently demonstrates clear and concise written and verbal communication
- Demonstrated ability to remain unbiased in a diverse working environment
- Bachelors degree/University degree preferred or equivalent experience
