Brief description

The main purpose of this position is to provide leadership and strategic direction to the Forecasting, Planning and Business Optimisation Division in the Currency Management Department (CMD) of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) by overseeing the planning and forecasting of banknotes and coin as well as lean management and engagement with the cash industry to ensure business continuity.

Detailed description

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:

Provide input into the departmental strategy and policy, aligned to the SARB strategy, and communicate and clarify the vision and strategic goals of the department to own team.
Develop strategy-aligned divisional operational plans, policies and procedures as well as systems for approval by the Head of Department (HoD).
Oversee and authorise the provision of management information for the purpose of decision making.
Oversee divisional projects and the implementation of the cash management strategy nationally.
Provide leadership and oversight to cash industry programmes and projects to optimise the value chain.
Oversee the planning for the optimal supply of banknotes and coin and identify and manage the associated risks to ensure business continuity.
Oversee the formulation of a framework for cash supply chain technologies, systems and solutions aligned to long-term objectives.
Develop and maintain strategic relationships with major stakeholders in and outside the SARB to ensure that (i) cash management strategies remain relevant and sustainable; (ii) changes impacting the external environments are appropriately managed; and (iii) partnerships with key vendors are maintained and enhanced.
Manage the implementation of currency policies and improve the workflow and application of processes and procedures of the division.
Prioritise work, manage resource utilisation and the quality of deliverables, and control costs, ensuring an alignment with the related functions and organisational value chain.
Create a performance culture in the division, define performance expectations and conduct effective performance management of direct reports.
Stay abreast of technology/equipment in the currency space to provide thought leadership to the CMD teams and the SARB.
Manage compliance and risk as required and ensure that the operational currency risks are identified, assessed and mitigated.

Job requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates must have:

a minimum of an Honours degree in Commerce or Supply Chain Management or an equivalent qualification;
a minimum of 10 to 12 years experience at a general management level, of which at least 6 years in a fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) or related operations management environment; and
a Masters degree and currency/cash industry knowledge will be an added advantage.
