About The Role

We are excited to offer a unique opportunity for a dynamic and experienced professional to join the British Council Yemen as the Head of Youth and Civil Society Programmes. This role is central to developing, piloting and improving innovative ways of engagement between young people, civil society, independent media and wider stakeholders to address issues of importance to young people in Yemen.

As the Programme Lead, the post holder will play a crucial part in in shaping, managing and delivering impactful programmes for youth and civil society sector in Yemen while playing an important part in the overall leadership of our Yemen operation.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead our work in this very important area and be part of a broader regional team of colleagues and community of practice. The role provides opportunities for personal and professional development and travel around the MENA region. Through this work the post holder will make a sustainable impact in the building of trust and collaboration between different sections of society within Yemen and with the UK.

Language Requirements

What we require of the successful candidate :
  • C1 English (Fluent in writing, reading, and speaking)
  • Fluent Arabic (writing, reading, and speaking)
Education And Qualifications
  • Foundation level Project Management qualification (in-house training or evidence of Continuous Professional development in this area could be considered) or relevant work experience.
  • Qualification or significant experience working in the field of social development and governance (desirable)
Role Specific Skills, Knowledge And Experience
  • Technical and contextual knowledge of youth and civil society sector in Yemen, including experience inside a local CSO and engagement at the grassroot level.
  • Technical and contextual knowledge of independent media in Yemen (desirable)
  • Experience in building strategic partnerships and relationships to win contracts in the Youth and Civil Society Sector.
  • Experience of managing large scale programmes that meet international standards, ensuring successful outcomes and meaningful change.
  • Knowledge/ and or experience of navigating funding sources to creatively manage resources and ensure compliance, enabling sustained programme success
  • Experience of client management, partner management and/or contract management in the Yemen context.
  • Experience of fostering collaboration between a wide range of stakeholders
  • Experience of managing projects or managing aspects of programmes
  • Experience in spotting risk in a project or programme and putting together successful risk mitigation with the Senior Responsible Officer
  • Understanding of Monitoring & Evaluation and Learning principles
  • Experience of managing teams (in the same office and remotely).
  • Experience of conducting lessons learned reviews/After action reviews to inform future programme design and management.
