Vestas Southern Africa currently operates and maintains 12 wind farms in South Africa, with a combined installed capacity of over 900MW.
The job entails operating high-voltage equipment, maintaining HV equipment and its associated auxiliaries, and supervising subcontractors. Your role will involve close collaboration with our construction and service teams to participate in the installation, commissioning, testing, and handover of newly installed electrical Balance of Plant systems (eBoP). The HV technician may also be engaged in the operation and maintenance of wind turbine equipment for Vestas.
Responsibilities
Safety
- Ensure that each task is undertaken in a manner that ensures the safety of personnel, protects the environment and work methods are followed at all times
- Comply with OH&S and associated regulations in the workplace as applicable
- Undertake Site Inductions, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Report all incidents, accidents or near misses
- Observe all work instructions, procedures, safety codes of practice, employer requirements and statutory rules and regulations
- Ensure teams and subcontractors adhere to Vestas HV Safety rules
- Travel to sites and undertake HV scheduled service, inspections and reactive maintenance as required
- Provide remote operational and technical support to site-based HV technicians or operators
- Respond and attend the site outside normal working hours to undertake unscheduled maintenance as required
- Plan and implement substation maintenance shutdowns - coordinate (including liaising with internal teams), supervise 3rd parties and generate reports as needed
- Undertake operations and maintenance within the limits of training and authorization including operation of HV and LV equipment
- Carry out assignments in Windfarm Handover process for new installations
- All other duties within their competence, skill, qualification and experience as directed
- Maintain good relationships with internal and external customers
- Understand external customer requirements
- Provide prompt on-site feedback to customers
- Liaise with Power Utilities on operational matters
- Support site teams with their requests
- Participate in Safety, Toolbox or other meetings where required
- Coordinate and supervise working parties as needed
- Provide oversight on the training of HV operators
- Liaise with other stakeholders for tasks that require input across teams e.g. Procurement, Sales, CRM, etc.
- Electrical Engineering Diploma or Higher Diploma or B-Tech
- Substation experience is an added value
- Solid HV operator knowledge, in line with ORHVS requirements and guidelines
- Minimum of 2 years of experience with Substation and Collection System
- Advanced knowledge of providing safe access to HV equipment, including writing switching instructions and electrical access authorities
- Advanced knowledge of HV equipment (Substation & Reticulation), operation, control (including SCADA), protection relays interrogation and maintenance practices
- Knowledge of wind turbine, solar and storage battery systems components, and controls, including knowledge of processes and systems for the installation, commissioning, and maintenance
- Ability to identify and define the source of problems through a critical and objective process and evaluate possible solutions based on facts and sound judgment
- A work approach based on logic, consistency, planning and organization
