Interdisciplinary Data Scientist

Summary

The Government-Wide direct hire authority for Scientific, Technical, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) occupations is being used to fill this position.

This is not a remote position. Selectee will be required to report to the agreed upon location. If the agreed upon location results in the relocation of the selectee, the travel, transportation, and relocation expenses are not authorized.

DutiesThe incumbent of this position will serve as an Interdisciplinary Data Scientist within the Integrated Information Dissemination Division (IIDD), some of the specific duties of the position will include:
  • Contribute to individual projects within the IIDD-Data Science set of capabilities (data-driven modeling, machine learning operations, reproducible workflows, data visualization, web analytics).
  • Build, test and deploy data pipelines to cloud resources in collaboration with interdisciplinary project team.
  • Engage in project planning, building prototypes, and/or aid in the design of concepts that bring data science approaches into USGS-Water Mission Area water prediction/assessment projects.
  • Identify patterns and outliers in datasets and apply existing software tools and known procedures to collect and analyze structured and unstructured data.

Qualifications

This is an interdisciplinary position that may be filled as a Biologist GS-0401, Physical Scientist GS-1301, or Mathematical Statistician GS-1529; you must meet the basic education requirements for at least one job series plus the additional specialized experience and/or graduate education as notated below to be minimally qualified and referred.

Basic Educational Requirement

BIOLOGIST, GS-0401:
  • Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
  • OR
  • Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years.
Physical Scientist, Gs-1301
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
  • OR
  • A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years.
Mathematical Statistician, Gs-1529
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degreethat included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.
  • OR
  • A combination of education and experience--24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics, PLUS appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years.
For Part B of the educational requirement of each series, the education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A". To qualify for the GS-11, for all series:In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have specialized experience, graduate education, or a combination of specialized experience and graduate education as defined below.

Specialized Experience: Possess one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level. Examples of experience at the GS-09 level work may include:
  • Contributing to moderately sized projects involving physical, hydrologic, biological, natural resources, or geospatial data and/or information delivery
  • Using a variety of data collection and processing methods
  • Building reproducible data pipelines in modern programming languages (e.g., R, Python)
  • Writing test suites for code base
  • Data visualization
  • Training or utilizing artificial intelligence / machine learning models
  • Advancing current data users' workflows

Graduate Degree: A Ph. D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or physical science.
  • OR
Graduate Education: Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. degree in the biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or physical science.
  • OR
Combination of Specialized Experience and Graduate Education: Possess a combination of graduate level education as described in above, beyond the first two years of progressive graduate study, and appropriate professional experience that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.

To qualify for the GS-12, for all series: In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level. Examples of experience at the GS-11 level may include:
  • Development of best practices that improve reproducibility, data quality, automation, documentation, and/or efficiency of software code
  • Planning and executing complex projects involving physical, hydrologic, biological, natural resources, or geospatial data and/or information delivery
  • Use of a variety of data collection and processing methods,
  • Reproducible data pipelines in modern programming languages (e.g., R, Python)
  • Data visualization
  • Design and development of artificial intelligence/machine learning models
  • Advancing current data users' workflows
  • Deploying data pipelines or models on cloud resources
