The key purpose of this role is to contribute to the malting barley development program by coordinating and scheduling the execution of SABBIs agricultural research and development trials to generate meaningful and applicable information to enhance the quality and yield of malting barley as well as provide an information service to barley producers on the cultivation of new malting barley in order to enhance quality and yield.
Key roles and responsibilities:
- Organise and ensure suitable trial sites
- Identify trial sites to be representative of area according to GIS information
- Negotiate and agree trial sites with various producers
- Take soil samples according to set practices and forward to soil laboratory for analysis
- Take suitable decisions based on evaluation of analysis
- Confirm trial sites with selected procedures
- Plan and prepare for the availability of trial treatments (material)
- Organise meetings with breeders
- Determine quantities of seed, fertilizer and pesticides needed for trials
- Obtain correct quantities of different lines for LE trials from breeders
- Clean and treat seed with recommended fungicides
- Measure out seed, fertilizer and pesticides according to pre-determined quantities and trial design
- Control the execution of trials
- Do soil preparation to ensure a suitable seed bed for trial planter
- Calibrate planter and spraying equipment
- Plant trials in optimum planting window
- Maintain all trials from planting to harvesting;
- Apply different trial treatments according to trial plans;
- Windrow and harvest trials according to trial plans and on time
- Measure the treatment effects
- Bachelor's or advanced degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Plant Breeding, or related field.
- Proven experience in managing field trials, preferably with a focus on barley or other cereal crops.
- SANSOR Diploma for production and certification of pure seed for cultivar maintenance desirable.
