Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Tool, Jig and Die Maker to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, constructing, and repairing precision tools, dies, molds, jigs, and fixtures used in the creation and production of various components. The ideal candidate should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret blueprints and technical drawings.

Core Activities

Design and Planning:
  • Interpreting engineering drawings and blueprints to understand the specifications and requirements of the tool, die, or jig.
  • Utilising computer-aided design (CAD) software to design and plan the creation of tools, dies, and jigs.
Material Selection and Preparation:
  • Choosing appropriate materials based on required specifications and end-use.
  • Preparing and cutting materials to size using various machinery and tools.
Machining and Shaping:
  • Operating different types of machines such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and drill presses to cut, shape, and form parts.
  • Utilizing precision hand tools for detailed shaping and finishing tasks.
Assembly and Inspection:
  • Assembling various parts to form complete tools, dies, or jigs.
  • Conduct detailed inspections to ensure the final product meets the required specifications and tolerances.
Testing and Quality Assurance:
  • Testing the tools, dies, or jigs to ensure they function as intended.
  • Adjusting and fine-tuning the products to achieve the desired outcome.
Maintenance and Repairs:
  • Performing regular maintenance on tools, dies, and jigs to ensure their longevity and optimal performance.
  • Diagnosing issues and carrying out repairs as needed.
Documentation and Record Keeping:
  • Maintaining accurate records of designs, materials used, machining parameters, and maintenance schedules.
  • Document any modifications or alterations made to the original design.
Collaboration and Communication:
  • Collaborating with other departments such as engineering, production, and quality control to meet project requirements and timelines.
  • Communicating effectively with team members and supervisors regarding project status and any challenges encountered.
Safety and Compliance:
  • Adhering to all workplace safety guidelines and regulations.
  • Ensuring that all tools dies, and jigs comply with industry standards and customer specifications.

  • Diagnosing problems with tools, dies, and jigs and deciding on the best course of action to resolve issues.
  • Making judgment calls in situations where a quick resolution is needed to prevent delays in production.
Safety and Compliance:
  • Ensuring that all activities and products comply with safety standards and regulations.
  • Making decisions about safety improvements or changes in practices to enhance workplace safety.
Resource Allocation:
  • Deciding how to allocate time and resources most effectively to meet production schedules.

Requirements
  • Grade 12 with completed Tool, Jig and Die Maker Apprenticeship.
  • Proven experience as a Tool and Die Maker in a manufacturing or related industry.
  • Proficiency in using CAD software for tool and die design and modification.
  • Strong knowledge of materials, machining techniques, and manufacturing processes related to tool and die making.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications accurately.
  • Proficiency in using various tools and equipment, such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and CNC machines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and precision in all work-related activities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot mechanical and manufacturing issues.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
