The IT Senior Systems Engineer is a senior position in the IT Systems Administration job family and ensures continuous availability of IT services by effectively managing the identification of system requirements, installation of upgrades and monitoring of system performance for highly complex systems.
The primary responsibility of the IT Senior Systems Engineer is to ensure the design and implementation of systems, software and networks by defining highly complex system requirements, determining system specifications and process and working parameters. In so doing, they take responsibility for the successful implementation of projects related to the management and support of the integration of various applications and platforms from a technical integration and business process perspective.
Working at NTT
Install and configure servers
The IT Senior Systems Engineer takes overall responsibility for the establishment of the system by planning, executing the selection, configuration and testing of server hardware, software, local area network and wide area networks. They advise on the installation, configuration and upgrade servers in line with policy and system requirements.
Install and configure application software
IT Senior Systems Engineers ensure that application software is available to users. They do this by testing, installing, configuring and upgrading new and existing application software to ensure that it performs without fault. He/she recommends the changes to the system, including the application software requirements for such changes and work in collaboration with the Change Control team to ensure that the system is updated with upgraded versions of application software.
Creating and maintaining user accounts
The IT Senior Systems Engineer advises on and establishes the policy and procedure that govern creation and maintenance of user accounts. They ensure the documentation and communication of these policies and procedures. They ensure the creation of new user accounts and the configuration and resetting of passwords. These individuals determine and verify access requirements and ensure that the necessary approvals are obtained prior to provide access rights to users. They also assist with the removal and restricting of access and verify details of status changes in line with security breaches and identity statuses.
Back-up and restore files
Working closely with the IT Database Administration and Service Delivery Back-up and Storage Administration organisations, the IT Senior Systems Engineer ensures the back-up of important files to enable system restoration and minimal disruption in the event of a hardware, security or administration failure. They take responsibility for the development and implementation of a back-up and recovery policy. He/she advises on the development and implementation of the disaster recovery plan.
Performance monitoring and system tuning
The IT Senior Systems Engineer ensures that the system hardware and software are compatible and capable of the required performance metrics. They ensure system performance by performing system monitoring and analysis and performance tuning. They are required to be proactive and troubleshoot system hardware and software by identifying problems and potential solutions. IT Senior Systems Engineers perform routine server and network start up and shut down procedures to maintain system performance. They run system load or stress testing and when required escalate application problems to the relevant stakeholders.
This individual uses the relevant system performance tools to determine when hardware should be upgraded, and to pro-actively ensure stability and availability. They engage with clients to identify problems with a current system or about a function a client would like the system to accomplish and ensure the required solutions.
Configure a secure system
The IT Senior Systems Engineer takes responsibility for the security of the system by managing security permissions within the system and within systems to which it is connected. They advise on the setup of security policies which enable the management of risk for users. They plan, coordinate, and implement network security measures in order to protect data, software, and hardware.
Research and Development
IT Senior Systems Engineers are required to do technical research, development and testing for any current product or service, and any new product or service that may improve IT Services or Business function. Integrating new systems into current systems may be a requirement. These changes should be documented in line with policy.
Reports
IT Senior Systems Engineers document the systems environment and are required to generate a variety of system reports. This includes the design of custom reports using the relevant system reporting services. They take responsibility for maintaining documentation relevant to all system upgrades including the logging and documentation of faults and solutions.
People manager
They act as people managers, ensuring that their team is motivated and has the required tools to perform their jobs. They take responsibility for the operational management the systems administration team.
Behavioural skills
IT Senior Systems Engineers stay current with trends in the industry and use this information to ensure system and server upgrades are implemented in accordance with Dimension Data policies. They have excellent problem solving ability and are self-motivated. Their communication skills (both verbal and written) are well developed and they contribute to the success of the team. These employees are required to display a high level of attention to detail and excellent planning ability and demonstrate an ability to cope under pressure. They need to be able to adapt to change and think innovatively. Time management is also essential. They demonstrate good project management skills with a willingness to constantly review and improve skills and processes.
