The Department -The Centre for Biological Control
The Centre for Biological Control in the Department of Zoology and Entomology at Rhodes University comprises a consortium of research institutions, including the Universities of Cape Town, Fort Hare, Mpumalanga, Pretoria and the Witwatersrand; Citrus Research International, and the Agricultural Research Council. The centres research focuses on understanding the ecological dynamics of invasive alien species, and agricultural pests, with particular focus on aquatic and terrestrial plants and pests of the fruit industry. Through this research the centre works towards developing biological control methods that are safe, effective, and sustainable.
Main Objectives
Research is the main focus, and teaching is not a core function. Where the researchers are on contract, raising funds for their employment, contract research shall be regarded as equivalent to more traditional forms of research.
In assessing the candidates scholarship for promotion, consideration will be given to the individual's track record. While disciplinary differences are considered, the candidate must demonstrate a standing within the discipline based on their research and student research. This could mean that the individual has demonstrated leadership, made a major contribution to research projects, and been the lead author on publications or has demonstrated a consistent individual contribution in several publications throughout their academic career.
The Requirements
- At least a PhD in Entomology with three years experience.
- Ability to write research proposals, conduct independent research, and supervise/co-supervise students.
- Knowledge of classical weed biological control.
- Knowledge of weeds in high-elevation areas.

Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R669 853.49
All applications will be treated in strict confidence. This post is advertised as a permanent post, but the University may opt to appoint on a fixed-term contract of not less than three years. The University reserves the right not to proceed with the filling of the post. An application in itself does not entitle the applicant to an interview. Rhodes University has a vaccination mandate as part of its Conditions of Service. The implementation of the vaccine mandate has been held in abeyance from 01 January 2023.
