Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate Loan Applications: Review and analyze mortgage loan applications to determine eligibility, ensuring they meet HUD, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac standards.
- Creditworthiness Assessment: Assess borrowers' credit histories, financial status, and other relevant information to evaluate risk and determine loan viability.
- Compliance Verification: Ensure all loan applications comply with federal guidelines, regulations, and internal policies.
- Risk Mitigation: Identify potential risks associated with loan applications and recommend appropriate actions to mitigate these risks.
- Documentation Review: Verify the accuracy and completeness of all required documentation, including income statements, credit reports, and property appraisals.
- Communication: Collaborate with loan officers, borrowers, and other stakeholders to gather necessary information and clarify underwriting requirements.
- Decision Making: Make informed decisions on loan approvals, modifications, or denials based on thorough analysis and established criteria.
- Reporting: Prepare detailed reports on loan application evaluations and maintain accurate records of underwriting decisions and justifications.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on changes in HUD, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac guidelines, and continuously improve underwriting processes and practices.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, specifically with HUD, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac.
- Education: Bachelors degree in finance, business, or a related field is preferred.
- Certifications: Relevant certifications in mortgage underwriting or housing finance are a plus.
- Knowledge: In-depth understanding of federal housing regulations, underwriting guidelines, and risk assessment principles.
- Skills: Strong analytical, decision-making, and communication skills. Proficiency in mortgage underwriting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Attention to Detail: Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in evaluating loan applications and supporting documents.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to identify potential issues and develop effective solutions to mitigate risks.
