The Anatomy Section of the Department of Anatomy and Physiology is responsible for teaching undergraduate- and postgraduate anatomy and histology to Veterinary Science- and Veterinary Nursing students. Comparative anatomy of the dog, pig, cat, horse and ruminants (cow, sheep and goats) is presented to undergraduate students. It will be the duty of the incumbent to assist with the sourcing and preparation of the different specimens as training material.
Responsibilities
- Cleaning of facilities;
- Preparation of lecture halls for student practical training;
- Storage of the osteology collection;
- Assist with preparing of practical training material through the different methods of:
- Embalming;
- Cooking, cleaning, defatting of bones;
- Building skeletons;
- Building of Perspex containers;
- Building of frames for skeletons (including welding, painting and mounting on wheels, etc.) for larger animals;
- Assist with maintaining the exhibitions of the Anatomy Museum, making Perspex containers as needed;
- Delivery duties; and
- Provide technical support for researchers, lecturers and students.
- An awarded National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) with 2 years experience in the following:
- Working with cadavers or carcasses including handling, storage, cleaning and harvesting/sourcing;
- Preparation and cleaning of registered facilities where cadavers or carcasses are handled; and
- Exposure to embalming.
- Proficient knowledge of and willingness to work with chemicals such as formalin and embalming fluids;
- Some knowledge of the anatomy of a dog/cat/horse/cow/sheep/pig;
- Diligence and attention to detail;
- Appropriate language and communication skills;
- Good interpersonal skills and proven ability to work in a team (relate to students and colleagues/peers/academics); and
- The candidate must be willing to work overtime when required.
- Valid drivers license;
- Experience towing a horsebox;
- Hoist and lifting equipment training;
- Welding experience; and
- Experience with the building of Perspex containers.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbents level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
