CORE PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To facilitate the learning and teaching activities in Microbiology at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to assist and contribute towards the administration of the department as required, and to undertake research and supervise and promote postgraduate research in Microbiology.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
- Teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students in Microbiology.
- Development of teaching and course materials for undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
- Perform teaching-related and departmental administrative duties.
- Attract external funding and provide research supervision to postgraduate students.
- Conduct research and publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals focused on Microbiology.
- Interact and liaise with external stakeholders (industry, government departments and independent research facilities) to further the goals of the Department and of the University.
- Participate in community engagement and marketing related activities.
- Provide academic leadership at appropriate levels within the learning, teaching and research arenas.
- Participate in mentoring and training of junior staff and contribution to departmental HR activities.
- Manage a microbiology laboratory.
- Proven ability to teach undergraduate students and demonstrated potential to supervise postgraduate students.
- Evidence of research and publication, in the field of Microbiology.
- Potential to become an NRF-rated researcher.
- Evidence of the ability to attract external funding for research.
- Participation in and / or leading a research team or project.
- Ability to work with and contribute to a team effort.
- Proven record or potential for providing academic leadership.
- Proven record or potential for dissemination of science, including conferences and outreach engagement.
- Minimum of an MSc in Microbiology. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed a PhD in Microbiology.
- Minimum of 1-3 years of university level learning and teaching experience (including lecturing and course assessment) at undergraduate level in the field of Microbiology, with postgraduate teaching experience being advantageous.
- supervision: Preference will be given to candidates with a proven track record of postgraduate student supervision in the Microbiology.
- Preference will be given to candidates with a proven track record of research publications in Microbiology in DHET accredited, ISI-rated journals.
