Job Description
The purpose of this role is to provide advanced and strategic legal support and guidance focusing on Tenure and Permitting to the Anglo American Group in South Africa, with an emphasis on expertise and individual contribution. To serve as a principal figure in the Tenure and Permitting discipline, aligning with the Group's business objectives.
Your duties will include:
- Provide strategic legal guidance and serve as a key contributor in Tenure and Permitting sub-disciplines: administrative and constitutional law; real estate law; mining law, licensing and rights; environmental and water law, regulation and permitting; collective title rights; broader mining regulation and permitting; and contracting of social performance including relocation.
- Collaborate and coordinate with local and global legal teams, including external legal experts and services.
- Stay abreast of evolving laws in South Africa, contributing to legal strategies.
- Collaborate in litigation processes and represent the Group in negotiations.
- Design and implement legal processes and improvements.
- Support the implementation of the global legal support framework for Tenure and Permitting developed by the Legal Managers: South Africa and Brazil
- Professionally qualified to practice law in South Africa
- Deep understanding of relevant South African law with expertise in three of the following commercial sub-disciplines: administrative and constitutional law; real estate law; mining law, licensing and rights; environmental and water law, regulation and permitting; collective title rights; broader mining regulation and permitting; and contracting of social performance including relocation.
- Mastery in understanding and applying complex legal principles.
- Mastery in drafting and reviewing legal documents.
- Experience in collaborating with peers within industry bodies.
- Experience in engagement with regulators.
- Proficient in legal research databases, legal project management tools, and designing training initiatives.
- Strong strategic and negotiation skills.
- Familiarity with South African litigation and administrative law procedures.
- Ability to read, write, and understand English at a level of legal professional fluency and ability to communicate in any other official South African language at a conversational level without the need for professional fluency.
