Job Description:
We are looking for a Maintenance Manager with at least 3 years of experience in a similar role to manage, mentor, and be accountable for the maintenance teams that maintain our solar PV electrical infrastructure. Your job will be leading, managing and being responsible for a team that reports to you. You will plan their maintenance activities, monitor assets in your portfolio, issue work orders, follow up on issued work orders, and close completed work orders.
Due to this job's high risk, you must be responsible and pay great attention to safety precautions. The ideal candidate must also have experience in leading and managing a team, have knowledge of PV solar system electrical systems, and can plan and execute maintenance activities. We will provide training in specialised solar systems and applications; therefore, specialised solar experience is optional but an advantage.
As a Maintenance Manager, you will be responsible for planning scheduled and unscheduled maintenance for your technical team, which is maintaining our solar systems, minimising the probability of accidents and downtime and maximising solar systems' smooth operations.
Position of the job in the organisation:
The successful candidate will report directly to the Head of O&M.
Principal responsibilities:
- Team management for your growing maintenance technicians, solar panel washing teams and apprentice/maintenance assistant teams, including mentoring for success
- Manages the scheduling of maintenance activities by resource planning
- Develop and implement maintenance plans for solar energy systems.
- Monitor and analyse system performance, including energy production and efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and enforce safety protocols.
- Oversee and maintain high maintenance quality standards.
- Addresses and resolves issues related to maintenance
- Monitor assets, issue work orders, follow up on work orders and close work orders
- Review maintenance reports, which include CBM, scheduled maintenance, and panel washing reports and utilise V-com for automation of these tasks
- Solar PV asset monitoring and reporting.
- Direct supervision of sub-contractors or overseeing the work of management contractors where required
- Monthly internal stakeholder reporting
- Updating of department KPIs every week
- Inventory management, including spares planning
- Daily monitoring and technical support
- Continuous improvement of documentation, processes and policies
- ASR creation
- Conduct O&M audits on sites on an adhoc basis to retain quality control
- Health and safety management of the team
- Warranty claims
- Coordination and management of the panel washing teams/subcontractors
- Any other job duties as required.
Experience:
- 3 years+ experience in asset and maintenance management in the solar PV industry.
- Proven Experience as an electrician.
- Diploma in relevant vocational training or completed apprenticeship as an electrician.
- Experience and knowledge of leading and managing a team
- Have the ability to plan, issue and manage maintenance activities
- Thorough knowledge of safety procedures and legal regulations and guidelines.
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving ability.
- Able to effectively multitask, prioritise and meet strict deadlines.
- Valid driver's license and willing to travel.
- Resourceful and comfortable working in a fast-paced and changing environment.
- Comfortable with working at heights.
- Computer literacy (MS Office).
Advantageous Skills include:
- Solar systems.
- Generators
- SANS 10142 and NRS 097-2 standards specifically reference embedded generation.
- Surge and Lightning protection and grounding systems.
- Networking equipment and industrial communication protocols like Modbus, RS485, Ethernet, etc.

Work Conditions:
- Overtime may be required to meet required deadlines.
- Working over weekends may be needed when high-priority sites have emergency call-outs.
- After-hour monitoring of the PV assets will be required.
What does success look like?
By Month 3:
I will be familiar with our software and departmental processes. I will have participated in my monthly 1:1 meetings with my Head of Department and conducted my team 1:1s by the third month. I will understand the SAE way of managing my maintenance team for our solar PV electrical infrastructure, including resource planning, work order issuance, and safety protocols. I will conduct daily check-ins to ensure proactive maintenance activities.
By Month 6:
I have understood and performed roles and responsibilities associated with managing maintenance technicians, including conducting monthly 1:1s and quarterly reviews with the technicians, solar panel washing team and the maintenance assistant team. I will be accountable for scheduling maintenance activities, implementing maintenance plans, and ensuring health and safety regulations compliance. I will achieve key performance indicators (KPIs), utilise internal software proficiently, work collaboratively with the team, and demonstrate value in my contributions.
By Month 12:
I can confidently plan and execute scheduled and unscheduled maintenance for the O&M maintenance team, minimising accidents and downtime while maximising the smooth operation of solar systems. I will have achieved departmental rocks, and the company will value my work ethic, participation in the team, and ability to produce quality work that contributes to reaching organisational goals. I will be capable of supporting my team members and providing leadership in achieving excellence.
