Role Profile

We are looking to recruit a Managing Legal Counsel with a commercial and financial services background, a proven record of client service and a practical, problem-solving approach to support our businesses across EMEA, based in South Africa.

The successful candidate needs to be a hands-on, commercial contracts lawyer financial services experience (specifically advising on regulated benchmarks preferred) and will provide legal advice and expertise on complex matters with authority and autonomy providing support for both the Groups Data & Analytics Division (with a focus on LSEGs Benchmark and Indices business) and the Technology and Operations Legal team.

Key Responsibilities Of The Role
  • Providing a wide range of legal advice and support to the business (with a focus on LSEGs Benchmark and Indices division), sales, technology and procurement teams in EMEA.
  • Reviewing, drafting, revising and negotiating a wide range of agreements with customers, vendors, partners and other third parties, including data licenses, software and other intellectual property related licenses, SaaS, outsourcing, master agreements, term and conditions, non-disclosure agreements, and other complex commercial agreements.
  • Advising and responding on legal issues related to the collection, usage and licensing of news/content/data/benchmarks and indices, AI and software services from multiple sources.
  • Advising and responding on legal issues relating to regulations impacting LSEGs data products, in particular regulated benchmarks.
  • Advising and responding on legal issues (in a financial services context) related to cloud computing, resilience regulations (including DORA) and other emerging technologies (including AI).
  • Working with significant authority and autonomy to provide legal advice to internal stakeholders that may have significant implications for business performance, including in respect of litigation, regulatory issues, technology, vendors, intellectual property, privacy and cybersecurity matters, data misuse, and consumer complaints.
  • Working on general corporate and licensing matters.
  • Maintains close working relationship with relevant outside counsel and managed legal service providers.
  • Sharing responsibility for maintaining, updating and revising contract template agreements, processes and playbooks, supporting on special projects where required.
  • Acts as a trusted advisor regarding relevant markets, business strategies and operating environments to both the business and stakeholders, and identifies possible solutions to issues that arise.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of legal and regulatory developments that impact LSEG.
Essential Experience And Skills Required
  • Qualified lawyer with 10+ years experience in a legal position handling a broad range of commercial law disciplines; with related experience of financial services, in particular the UK and EU benchmark regulations
  • Must be fluent in English with excellent written and oral communications skills to interact confidently and effectively with internal and external stakeholders strong contract negotiation and drafting abilities with the ability to understand and simplify complex concepts and issues.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, analytical, operational and decision-making skills; comfortable with using technology to support these.
  • Sound administrative and time management skills, with sharp attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage substantial projects and deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and capability to build strong, trusted and effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders across different functions and cultures, positively influencing the behaviour of multiple stakeholders, and successfully balancing legal issues against pragmatic sound and commercial solutions.
  • Judgment, tact and discretion when dealing with people and issues.
