The position reports in the first instance to the Resident Engineer (RE) and then the Engineer, and ultimately to the Managing Director.
The candidate will be responsible for all the materials control on site (predominantly asphalt), including monitoring the activities of the on-site laboratory, arranging and co-ordinating all materials testing and materials reporting as required by SANRAL, and as directed by the RE.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Work in a close relationship with the sub-contracted on-site materials laboratory and the Laboratory Manager to manage progress and standards of the laboratory;
- Conduct regular laboratory inspections and draft reports in this regard;
- Act as liaison between the RE and the laboratory;
- Advise the RE on where the laboratory does not comply with the contractual and technical requirements;
- Prepare and/or evaluate materials mix designs for submission to the RE;
- Determine the number and locality of process/acceptance testing required for each lot;
- Co-ordinate the materials testing processes from contractor request to signing off test results;
- Undertake statistical evaluation of test results and make recommendations for approval or rejection;
- Inspect works daily which shall inter alia include materials sources, milled areas, asphalt surfacings, structures and any other materials related items on site;
- Do visual inspections on materials in lots submitted for approval;
- Inspect all trial sections constructed and complete trial section checklists;
- Populate progress sheets linking test requests with the position on layer works;
- Draft the monthly materials and laboratory reports;
- Keep As-Built data up to date in the prescribed format.
The ideal Candidate should:
- If not in possession of any formal tertiary qualification have a minimum of 20 years overall experience which includes 5 years relevant experience on major roads projects; or
- Have a National Diploma in Civil Engineering plus 10 years overall experience which includes 5 years relevant experience on major roads projects; or
- Be registered as a Professional Technician/Technologist by ECSA or any other international body recognized by ECSA with a minimum of 5 years experince on major roads projects;
- Have a thorough understanding of applicable statutory requirements, standards, specifications and codes within the materials testing environment (TMH, SANAS, etc) and more specifically asphalt (Sabita Manual 35);
- Be an honest, confident and effective communicator, a self-starter capable of working as a team and meeting deliverables against strict deadlines;
- Have strong interpersonal, analytical and problem solving skills;
- Have a valid drivers licence;
- Have solid demonstrable computer skills - MS office, Outlook, Word and Excel;
- Provide own transport, cell phone and laptop;
- Accommodation will be provided through the contract;
- Travel will be reimbursed at Bosch Projects rates.
