About the Position
MBOMBELA MUNICIPALITY seeks an individual to undertake the role of Regional SHEQ Officer based in NELSPRUIT (MBOMBELA) who must be fully equipped knowledge and understanding of its legislation. This candidate must have Valid Grade 12 Certificate and understanding of health and safety in the waste management sector.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Investigate accidents, incidents, non-conformance, causes of ill-health and complaints.
- Inspect workplaces to enforce safety and environmental laws.
- Examine ways to improve health, safety and environmental standards.
- Negotiate with managers and employees regarding provision of a safe working environment.
- Assist in the development of health, safety and environmental programmers and strategies.
PRIMARY ACTIVITIES:
- Compile and review risk assessments, safe working procedures, method statements, aspect and impact registers.
- Communicate risk assessments to the work force.
- Conduct safety and environmental inspections on site and report deviations to management.
- Compile fall protection plans. Ensure that all employees are evaluated for their physical and psychological fitness to work at elevated heights.
- Preparation of site emergency evacuation plans.
- Maintain good housekeeping principles.
- Coordinate training of employees on site.
- Ensure all health & safety reps conduct monthly H&S rep inspections of their work areas.
- Ensure that toolbox talks are regularly provided.
- Conduct regular fire prevention and construction facilities inspections with findings documented and reported to management.
- Ensure all registers and checklists are updated on a weekly and monthly basis.
- Assist in appointment of safety representatives for all departments.
- Evaluate incident forms, surveys and audits to establish root causes and together with Supervisors and Managers concerned, formulate a plan of action to correct non-compliant behavior or conditions.
- Prepare client site files.
- Liaise with on-site contractors to ensure their compliance with company safety and environmental regulations and adherence to safety standards, including basic safety induction training.
- Liaise with government officials
- Identify unsafe acts, conditions, and hazards, investigate root causes and identify corrective and preventative actions and report to management.
- Co-ordinate evacuation exercises to ensure that all staff become familiar with evacuation procedures.
- Assist with the formulation of emergency/contingency plans for:
- Natural disaster
- Industrial action
- Political unrest
- Fire
- Explosions
- Bomb threats
- Review and update Emergency Procedures as and when necessary.
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES:
- Must be physically able to move around depot sites and customers premises.
- Must be able to cope with the stresses of audit deadlines, client requirements and interaction with management.
