Mechanical Engineer

Tongaat Hulett has a proud 131-year history and a strong socio-economic legacy in KwaZulu-Natal province, in South Africa, and into sub-Saharan Africa. Technical operations include the following: -
  • Three Sugar Manufacturing mills situated on along the North coast of Kwa Zulu Natal stretching from Tongaat through to Empangeni.
  • A sugar Refining operations based in South Coast Road Durban
  • An animal feeds manufacturing plant situated in Tongaat alongside the Maidstone Sugar Mill.
  • A technical operations support comprising technical specialists who provide high level support to the operations both in South Africa and foreign operations.

Purpose of Role: Responsible for the efficient running of the mechanical maintenance function for the Refinery Back End (White and Recovery Pan Houses & Machine Shop), and the provision of high quality, cost effective mechanical engineering services.

Accountabilities
  • Manage performance of teams and direct reports
  • Prioritizes and organizes activities and evaluates procedures, systems and other resources for the safe execution of the mechanical works to plant and machinery
  • Experience with batch centrifugals, rotary sugar driers, belt and screw conveyors, centrifugal and PD pumps, gearboxes, vacuum pumps and general sugar processing equipment will be advantageous
  • Co-ordinates and controls tasks/activities associated with managing personnel performance, productivity and discipline
  • Controls the Mechanical Planned Maintenance Works program and, oversees new installations and fault finding and repair procedures
  • Participates in continuous improvement mechanical engineering projects.
  • Implements statutory and policy guidelines in relation to safe work practices and other related requirements
  • Responds to standby duties, call-outs and breakdowns, handles queries and presents information relating to the operations
  • Attends to administrative requirements in relation to the processing, maintenance, SAP/CMMS and reporting of activity related information
Qualifications And Experience Required
  • BSc/ BTech Mechanical Engineering. GCC will be advantageous.
  • 5-10 years experience in a mechanical engineering environment preferably in the sugar industry
  • Experience with maintenance and design of mechanical equipment
  • Experience of leading teams in a unionised environment
  • Must have a sound knowledge of mechanical engineering including repair methodologies and life extension techniques
  • Knowledge of MS Office Pack, Projects and SAP/CMMS
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Analytical and dynamic minded, passionate about continuous improvement, performance and results driven
  • Able to operate in a complex and highly pressurised environment

  • Team leadership effectively lead maintenance team, area resources and contractors to achieve plant operational requirements
  • Problem solving - able to apply rigorous problem-solving methods to find root causes, explore creative options and solve difficult problems for measurable business value
  • Analytical thinking - able to interpret, link and analyse information systemically to understand complexity
  • Communication and Knowledge management - able to communicate broadly and powerfully and share information and knowledge using appropriate channels
  • Risk Assessment and Safety Management be able to assess risk and operational threats, and safely achieve performance requirements
  • Budgeting and financial management astute forecasting and effective expenditure control skills
