Introduction
NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) DIVISION: FINANCE AND FACILITIES DEPARTMENT: FINANCIAL PLANNING POSITION NUMBER: N000777 VACANCY: SAFETY COORDINATOR PEROMNES GRADE: 10 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Responsible for overseeing and coordinating the health and safety management system of assigned NWU Faculties, Schools and Departments. Attend to campus safety enquiries, hazard assessments, conducting investigations into incidents and carry out internal audits at the NWU.
Job Description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Hazard Investigation and Management
- Investigate/assess all hazards reported to via IWMS / email , telephone -received.
- Provide feedback via IWMS system or transfer to relevant Dept - IWMS report monthly to be assessed and feedback provided to HOD.
- Escalate to relevant director/manager for action - as required via email/IWMS. Note: Where the enquiries is related to any technical aspect The coordinator must refer the matter to the NWU technical expert for a recommendation.
- Provide monthly report to HOD of SHE Department
- Investigate all incidents on behalf of the HOD. Report findings and make formal recommendations to prevent re-occurrence. Assist Campus staff with the reporting procedure in respect of incidents.
- Communicate in January of each year the NWU Incident Investigation Procedure to appointed Assistant 16(2) and OHS representatives via email.
- Indicate your availability to assist with facilitation sessions on the Incident Investigation Procedure (Training on procedures).
- Keep formal records of communication and facilitation sessions.
- Compile and update campus IOD register.
- Analyse Incidents trends and statistics.
- Investigate all incidents ensure control measures from incident investigations are implemented: Reports available for each incident.
- Formal follow up after recommendations/controls are implemented to ensure that risk control measures are effective and sufficient - close out report as part of incident investigation.
- Co-ordinate emergency preparedness drills and issue reports.
- All in accordance with planning by the HOD of the department:
- Communicate emergency procedure and process for scheduling drills to NWU staff and students.
- Compliance with conducting drills. Maintain drills schedule and drills record register.
- Conduct drills - feedback report for all drills to Dept/Fac./Business units and maintain drills conducted register.
- Ensure NWU business units at campus conducts OHS meetings in terms of the OHS Act and conduct OHS management meetings to address/discuss OHS matters.
- Attend all OHS committee meetings and ensure that issues raised are resolved by management and escalated timeously.
- All Faculties/Schools/Depts/Business units conduct meetings quarterly: Assess composition, ToR and working of meetings and take corrective actions with faculty / depts to are not correct.
- Compile and implement quarterly inspection/audit planner for all Faculties/Departments.
- Inspection/ audit reports for each Faculty and departments (all schools business unit included) at 2 per year.
- Compile and issue formal reports to HOD and Faculty, School or Department management.
- Escalation of sub-standard conditions or acts that cannot be closed / rectified to Campus OHS meetings.
- Complete and maintain master list of all Faculties/Departments of the campus and status of eachs OHS requirements as per NWU OHS system.
- Assess compliance of each Faculty/Department and take corrective actions and coordinate with Faculty/Department for corrective actions.

- Inspections at event venue and assessment of event plan and risk assessments.
- Present SHE matters to R&O / Rag members - if and when needed.
- A bachelors Degree (NQF level 7) in Safety or Health.
- A minimum of 3 years experience in Safety Management.
- A minimum of 3 years' experience in OHS auditing and reporting.
- A minimum of 3 years' experience in OHS system implementation and management.
- A postgraduate qualification in Management.
- Registration as a Registration as a construction Health and Safety Manager with (SACPCMP)- Pr.CHSM.
- Registration as a construction Health and Safety Agent with (SACPCMP)- Pr.CHSA.
- Experience in the implementation and management of safety management systems.
- In depth knowledge of OHS Legislation.
- Knowledge of conducting risk assessment, OHS budgets, OHS specifications and auding.
- Computer literacy: MS Office.
- Excellent written, communication and reporting skills.
- Compile SHE budgets and cost estimates.
- Excellent resource allocation and time management skills.
- Experience in management of multiple projects simultaneously.
- Team leader and team player (positive social and interpersonal skills).
- Able to operate independently with delegated authorities.
- Strategic thinker and planner.
- Ability to work under pressure and high demand.
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
