NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) DIVISION: FINANCE AND FACILITIES DEPARTMENT: CATERING SERVICES POSITION NUMBER: P001788 VACANCY: COOK PEROMNES GRADE: 16 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: The cook is responsible for food preparation in a large kitchen. It is necessary to fill the position to ensure the fluent and effective operation at Dampad. The cook will also be responsible for food preparation for functions.

Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Food preparation
  • Preparation of food for dining halls and functions.
Quality and portion control
  • Ensure quality and portion control during the food preparation and the serving process.
Occupational health and safety
  • Adhere to health and safety procedures.
Communication
  • Good communication with colleagues, students, and clients.
Personal development
  • Development of the own person and staying abreast of new technology.
Ad hoc tasks
  • Perform ad hoc tasks.
Key Functional/ Technical Competencies
  • The ability to prepare bulk food in a large catering environment.
  • Knowledge of occupational health & safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of cleaning procedures of large equipment.
  • Knowledge regarding quality and portion control.
  • Knowledge of the handling and use of equipment in a food service unit.
  • The ability to read, understand and implement recipes.
  • The ability to lift heavy items.
  • The ability to read and write.
Key Behavioural Competencies
  • Willingness to work irregular hours.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to function under pressure.
  • The ability to work as part of a team.
Minimum Requirements
  • Grade 12 (NQF Level 4).
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience in bulk food preparation in a large catering environment.
Remuneration

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
