The Nurse, located in the Office of Healthcare Inspections, conducts oversight, monitoring, and evaluation of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) quality improvement programs and the activities of the VA Office of the Medical Inspector. OHI reviews specialized VA treatment program, patient care, quality improvement activities, and Hotline allegations involving medical care issues to strengthen VA's health care programs for veterans and their families.

As a Nurse, you will:
  • Serve as a Nurse Consultant with responsibilities related to the management, evaluation, and oversight of clinical and operational activities that are part of broad national VHA medical center programs supported by VA Office of the Medical Inspector.
  • Assist the project leader in a broad range of Quality Management (QM) and health care program inspections and evaluations.
  • Plan, coordinate, and/or conduct extensive pre-inspection clinical research, and provide appropriate guidance to non-clinical team members where such is needed.
  • Identify existing information sources from which to obtain a sufficient data base to facilitate the team's understanding of the clinical process or outcome to be inspected or evaluated and to identify possible clinical issues that require further development.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Registration Requirement: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

AND

Education requirement: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

AND

Specialized experience for the GS-13 is one year of experience at the GS-12 level, or equivalent, that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position which includes:
  • Experience providing clinical healthcare services requiring interpretation of various medical regulation and directives; AND
  • Experience conducting healthcare audits, inspections, or program evaluations. AND
  • Experience Identifying quality care issues and make recommendations in accordance with medical and nursing guidelines and regulations
Education

Education: A degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed.

Note: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied.

The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
