Location of Role: This role can be based in South Africa, UK, Chile, Brazil, Peru or Australia. Please note that although the position may be based in these locations, the successful candidate will be required to regularly work with South African and LATAM time zones.
Purpose of the role:
Advance the development and implementation of mining geosciences including, Value Based Ore Control (VBOC) and Mine Value Chain Reconciliation (MVCR), across Anglo American in collaboration with core disciplines (Geoscience, Mining & Processing), Business Units and directly with operations to ensure that maximum value is extracted from our orebodies during mining, focused on Open Cast Mining Operations, but not limited to it.

Performance & Delivery
Thought Leadership
- Provide strategic thought leadership across the region, and in collaboration with other Principals Mining Geoscience, based on research and development, partnerships with strategic vendors and internal Anglo-American innovations.
- Conduct technical oversight and disseminate good practice in mining geology:
- Facilitate use and good practice on-site relating to ore control systems and reconciliation.
- Assess and develop mining geosciences value adding activities and metrics.
- Identify and advise on the implementation of mining geoscience technologies.
- Advise on mining geosciences site team selection, training, and development processes.
- Facilitate reports as required on mining geoscience for internal and external stakeholders.
- Promote mining geoscience knowledge sharing activities and systems.
- Ensure that the value of continuous improvement activities is measured and reported.
- Provide training and influence key performance indicators in mining geology.
- Mine to design and compliance to plan: Liaise with Group Mining and the operations on Mine to Design and Compliance to Plan performance, and actions required to improve on these metrics.
- Provide input into the implementation of VBOC and MVCR across Anglo Americans operations and coordinate their execution at operations within the region.
- Provide input into the development and implementation of VBOC and MVCR systems within Anglo American.
- Responsible to document, in conjunction with all key stakeholders, the relevant Best Practice Principles (BPPs) for Mining Geosciences, focused on (but not limited to) Open Cast Mining Operations.
- Facilitate the creation of roadmaps with the various operations to bridge any gaps that may exist with regards to Best Practice Principals.
- Demonstrable knowledge of mining geoscience practices and ability to provide specific explanation about factors contributing to performance and gaps especially in relation to Ore Control and Reconciliation
- Practical experience and a demonstrated thought leader/expert in the discipline/ field of mining geosciences.
- Track record of leading ideas generation; translating these into practical initiatives to be implemented and demonstration of successful execution and delivery within mining geosciences.
- Experience leading mining geosciences teams at a Senior Mine Geologist or equivalent - higher level in open pit operations.
- Expert understanding of mining operation requirements for drilling, sampling, logging, and assaying and related QAQC and data management practices.
- Expert level understanding of ore control systems, practices, and processes in open pit operations.
- Experience with software packages used in the construction of Ore Control models, delineation of mining volumes and definition of ore flow decisions.
- Knowledge of stockpiling strategies and material movement tracking systems and practices
- Knowledge of geological and structural mapping methodologies and modelling
- Understanding of primary mining and processing methods and the requirements of their integration with mining geosciences.
- Understanding of geometallurgical approaches.
- Operations: Advanced/Expert open pit geology and mining expertise
- Commercial: Proficient financial skills for budgeting and value delivery calculation
- Management: Advanced leadership, negotiation, presentation, social processing awareness and communication skills
- Compliance: Advanced planning and budgeting administration, Reconciliation & compliance to plan
- Proven track record of extensive practical experience (Minimum 8 10 years experience)
- BSc in Geology with Hons. Masters qualification favorable.
- Full accreditation from local professional governing body (i.e. AusIMM, SACNASP etc)
