Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of Procurement Category Manager: Direct Materials to be based at Rosebank Gauteng. The successful candidate will report to the Head of Procurement - South Africa.

Purpose Of The Job

Procurement has been on an exciting journey evolving the function driving areas such as sustainability, commodity excellence, best-in-class supplier relationship management (SRM). The South-Africa Direct Category Manager will play a key part in striving for world class as they oversee the Directs Spend (including Commodities) which can impact sustainability, commodity, SRM and multiple other areas.

The Direct Category includes Vegetable Oil, Batter, Ingredients, IQF Vegetables, Packaging (Corrugate & Flexible), Co-Manufacturing and Packaging Consumables, spend R350 R400 million with a high business impact. The Directs Manager has the scope to challenge how we work today, create and own the South African strategies, leveraging and cooperating with regional and global to drive the best outcome. This candidate should be thought leader and excellent business partner to join the team.

The Direct Category Manager will report into the Head of Procurement for South-Africa. South Africa is part of the APACSA Region (Australia, New Zealand, China, Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, India and South Africa). There are opportunities to advance through the organisation for the right person.

Its a time of change and opportunity within the procurement function at McCain. The Direct Category manager will be ability to realize significant wins for the business as this is a high spend, strategical business area where significant impact can be made. The Direct Category Manager will help to shape the function and help to establish best practices locally and regionally and provide input globally.

Key Performance Areas
  • Developing category strategies and leading the execution of these strategies for the Direct category unlocking sustainable value creation as well as security of supply.
  • Good understanding of commodity markets to help support the right coverage strategies (Short/Long positions).
  • Leading or partnering in sourcing activities to include vendor selections, negotiations, contract, and category management, along with business award (BAR).
  • Determining the right level of supplier relation management (category dependent) leveraging the right cadence of communication and level of stakeholder engagement.
  • Ensuring compliance and continuous improvement of proper procedures, policies, systems and controls. This will include monitoring supplier performance versus expectations/service level agreements.
  • Establish and maintain day-to-day working relationships with internal stakeholders and external business partners.
  • Ensuring the right level of communications and change management with business stakeholders to execute key strategies.
  • Represent and leverage external forums and associations to ensure market and procurement knowledge.
Educational & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelors Degree is required, ideally in a numerical/economical discipline. Masters Degree will be an added advantage.
  • Preference to Member of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (MCIPS).
  • A minimum of 5 years of commodity buying experience with accountability for large spend.
  • Industry experience has ideally been gained in the fast-moving consumer goods industry desired but not essential.
  • Has ideally gained experience in Direct Commodity buying on a regional basis or multi-country basis at a minimum. Preference for experience in buying Vegetable Oils and Packaging.
  • Competency in analyzing information, excellent attention to detail - ensuring accuracy in every step and problem solving.
  • Has a proven track record of successfully influencing and/or influencing change within a business.
  • Can or has previous experience in leading and developing a team of procurement professionals
  • Can point to success in realizing significant savings for the business.
  • Strong decision-making skills with the ability to handle tight deadlines and many competing priorities.
  • Strong quality assurance orientation.
  • Strong administrative capabilities with proficiency in SAP and Excel ideal.
  • He/she has superior influencing, collaboration, and communication skills (written and verbal) and is able to build strong working relationships.
  • The ideal candidate will have the presence, intellect, energy, drive, people skills and business acumen to succeed in a fast paced, high-performance environment and will be self-motivated.
  • Professional demeanor with strong presentation and influencing skills.
