Job Description

NPURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

To support the Director/Manager to develop, implement and maintain the research funding pre-award subprogramme and online tools to enable effective management and delivery of the research funding calls and application systems and projects across the institution.

To provide support and guidance on the research funding applications, processes and procedures, tools and training.

Monitoring and reporting of sub-programme progress and performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Sub-Programme Coordination:
  • Developing, documenting and maintaining research funding sub-programme management frameworks and tools, and supporting students and researchers to use these consistently and effectively.
  • Contributing to the development of sub-programme documentation, plans and reports.
  • Development and maintenance of resourced Pre-Award project or activity plans, including funding calls database, and allocation of duties to Admin Assistants and Interns where appropriate.
  • Sub-Programme Administration:
  • Maintaining Research Funding: Pre-Award subprogramme / projects records and establishing project controls.
  • Keeping the Director/Manager aware of the sub-programme status.
  • Preparation of project reports including status reports, identifying risks and taking action accordingly.
  • Providing flexible, hands-on delivery support and assisting with effective communication between the department and the role-players and relevant stakeholders.
  • Relationship Management, Planning and Training:
  • Manage professional relationships with research funding internal and external stakeholders.
  • Providing training and guidance to students and staff across the institution to develop research funding applications capabilities.
  • Implement and maintain appropriate research funding application systems.
Minimum Requirements
  • A bachelors degree (NQF level 7) in any field of study.
  • Membership with the Southern African Research & Innovation Management Association (SARIMA).
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in a support environment within the higher educator sector.
Recommendations
  • An honours degree or equivalent qualification (NQF level 8) in any field of study.
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in the National Research Foundation (NRF) funding systems.
Key Functional/ Technical Competencies
  • NRF Connect System
  • Extensive experience of preparing and communicating project-related documentation for funding applications.
  • Sufficient level of technical background to accurately and objectively evaluate project risks.
  • Ability to provide leadership to admin assistants and interns, and collaborate with other stakeholders.
  • Experience of designing & facilitating workshops/funding briefing sessions for researchers.
Behavioural Competencies
  • Discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including coaching, collaborating, and team building.
  • Analytical, planning, and organizational skills with an ability to manage competing demands.
  • Solid understanding of and demonstrated experience in using appropriate tools.
  • Good oral and written communications skills and experience interacting with stakeholders.
Remuneration

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
