Project Engineer - Water and Sanitation Durban
Salary : R600 000 FTC
Summary
The Project Engineer will be responsible for overseeing the engineering aspects of sanitation projects, including
detailed designs, technical feasibility studies, and construction supervision. This role includes project
management, capacity building, and public relations tasks aimed at advancing decentralized sanitation systems
and solid waste management. Comprehensive onboarding and training will be provided to ensure a thorough
understanding of the sanitation technical approach.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Tasks
- Detailed Engineering Designs: Develop comprehensive engineering designs for sanitation projects, including
projects. General understanding of Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS) and Fecal Sludge
- Treatment Plants (FSTPs) preferred.
- Technical Feasibility Studies: Conduct feasibility studies to assess the viability and technical requirements of
- Construction Supervision: Oversee the construction phase of sanitation projects to ensure adherence to
- Performance Monitoring and Evaluation: Monitor and evaluate project performance to ensure objectives and
- ent QMS to ensure project quality and compliance.
- Training and Support: Provide training and support for the operation and maintenance of decentralized
- Knowledge Documentation: Create and maintain knowledge documents to capture and share project and
- Database Reporting: Feed technical project results into national and international databases such as company
- Technical Standards: Support the development and implementation of QMS systems and technical standards and guidelines for DEWATS.
- Coordination: Coordinate information, resources, and stakeholders for assigned projects to ensure timely
- Document Management: Maintain organized filing of all project documents, both soft and hard copies.
- SOPs Development: Develop, implement, and monitor standard operational procedures (SOPs) as sanctioned by
- Reporting: Develop and support the creation of quarterly and annual reports based on donor requirements.
- Technical Factsheets: Prepare technical factsheets to summarize project and technical information.
- M&E: Conduct monitoring and evaluation on the performance of new and existing DEWATS and FSTPs.
- Training Manuals: Develop training manuals and coordinate training sessions on existing and new DEWATS and
- Technical Training: Facilitate and conduct technical training for stakeholders and team members.
- Sanitation Promotion: Promote holistic sanitation approaches in alignment with company goals.
- Field Visits: Conduct field visits for clients and government officials to showcase project progress.
- Events Support: Present at and support seminars, conferences, and workshops related to sanitation projects.
The ideal candidate for the position should have:
Education: Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
Masters degree preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in sanitation engineering or a related field, with a proven
track record in project management.
Registered with a professional body.
Skills: Strong technical skills in sanitation project design, feasibility studies, and construction
supervision. Proficiency in project management, technical writing, and training development.
Certifications: Relevant certifications in project management and quality management systems are
advantageous.
Attributes: Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work
collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
Interest in and knowledge of sustainable development and sanitation issues.
A self-starter mentality and the ability to work independently
