Care for vulnerable youth in education and community NGO based in Port Elizabeth (aged 7 to 18 years old).
Job responsibilities:
- Maintenance of student residence overall
- Transfer handyman skills to the boys
- Ensure the house is safe and secure at all times
- Oversee / ensure that residents adhere to execution of daily chores
- Have either on-on-one or group sessions informally with residents to establish their overall well-being and provide house mother with clear feedback on individual residents
- Establish a unique, nurturing relationship with each resident and support them in the best way possible - have a fatherly eye on all the interior and exterior needs of our home.
- Discuss all urgent matters re residents with house mother and provide input into addressing these matters
- When on-duty over a weekend, oversee the youth worker weekend actitives planned for the weekend, in advance and should be able to execute all planned activities.
- Give proper handover to house mother re what happened over the weekend
- Report all serious incidents to house mother
- Address behavioural/health and attitude issues
- Manage finances for the house (keep within allotted budget)
- Submit quarterly forecasts and expenditure reports
- Develop behaviour modification system, write out rules and consequences and ensure rules are displayed vividly
- Effective discipline of students
- Together with housemother revise and monitor the chores roster
- Mentor the house boys, initiate appropriate activities for the boys
- Mentor and guide students and research and initiate appropriate activities - life skills, fitness, vocational and literacy workshops, therapy, health and wellbeing
- Assist with all holiday programmes, weekend activities, events and workshops for the project. This includes all students, residents and community youth. Ages from 7yrs to 18yrs.
- Keep all student information and files /reports up to date working with the social worker, counsellor, teachers and house parents.
- Conduct counselling with students on a regular basis - especially younger residents.
- Submit reports to immediate superior highlighting successes, challenges and recommendations for the way forward.
- Drive students where needed and assist with project's driving needs, working mainly in the Northern areas
Job requirements:
- Registered and experienced Social Auxiliary Worker, Youth Care Worker or relevant qualification
- Must be male with minimum 5 years working experience in NGO entity
- Flexible, adaptable and ability to work on own and in a team.
- Very organised
- Excellent administrative skills
- Experience in counselling vulnerable youth
- Experience in facilitation and planning of youth activities and youth camps
- Skills development or facilitation background advantageous
- Valid driver’s license - ESSENTIAL - do not apply if you do not have a driver’s license
- Know Port Elizabeth well especially the townships and Northern areas
- Be comfortable driving to and working in the townships and Northern areas
- Residential NGO youth experience essential
- Fluent English essential and Afrikaans essential as children are mainly Afrikaans speaking
- Will be living on-site, do shift-work and work every other weekend
