The Chief Safety Officer UG is responsible for the management of the safety and risk department at the mine and the optimisation of the safety and risk control through design, implementation, evaluation, coordination and management of the safety and risk control systems, as well as for ensuring legal compliance at the Unit.

Job Description
- Lead / participate in Site Safety inspections and manage Safety Officers
- Subject matter expertise within the business of the mining activity and process under the roles control and direction
- Co-ordinate and participate in Safety audits for Operations / Sites
- Co-ordinate safety key performance indicators for Business Partners.
- Compile the annual Safety Improvement Plan ensuring plans are in place for Operations
- Co-ordinate and participate in Risk-Assessments for Operations
- Effectively manage people, ensuring that roles are well defined and clarified and that competencies and learning paths are developed to human capacity and capability
- Audit and inspection / PTOs program and schedule for shafts
- Determines the need for safety policies, procedures, and standards
- Approves safety and risk control recommendations
- Determines scheduling of external and internal safety audits
Qualifications
- Tertiary diploma (M+3) in Safety and Risk Control (NADSAM) or relevant qualifications.
- Blasting Certificate for metalliferous mines
- COMSOC I & II
- SAMTRAC
- ISO 45001
- Mine Overseer Certificate for metalliferous will be advantageous.
- Courses in Safety management systems (9001, 14001, 45002) will be advantageous.
- Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) will be advantageous.
- Trade Test certificate will be advantageous.
- 5 years relevant Mining / Engineering experience which should include developing, implementing, managing, and auditing of safety and risk control initiatives and programmes.
- Risk management techniques and critical controls
- Leadership tools for implementing a culture of purposeled high performance and change
- Computer literate (MS Power point, Word, Excel, Access, and Projects)
- AFRAD (Accredited Facilitators Risk Assessment Diploma)
- Auditors courses for Safety and Risk Control management
- Risk Assessment Techniques: (SWIFT, HAZOP, RAC and FMECA)
- Risk impact assessment
- Accident investigation (AICAT, RCAT or SCAT and LFI)
- Behaviour Based Safety
- First Aid
