Safety Officer Engineering

PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To ensure compliance to legislation, mine policies, code of practices, standard rules, and procedures in respect of safety issues in a designated area of responsibility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
  • Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) certificate with Maths and Science is essential.
  • Relevant Trade certificate is essential.
  • COMSOC/COMPLAT/SAMTRAC certificate is essential.
  • Must have a valid Code EB (08) drivers licence and own transport.
  • NADSAM will be advantageous.
  • Must have a valid medical certificate or be medically fit in order to obtain such a certificate.
  • Minimum of 3yrs working experience as an Engineering Foreman OR as a Safety Officer: Engineering is essential.
  • Knowledge of Standards and procedures is essential.
  • Must have knowledge of Engineering on Underground and Surface work areas.
  • Must have knowledge of Risk Assessment
  • Computer Skills (MS Office: Excel, Word, Power point, Outlook) is essential.
  • Basic health and safety skills is essential.
  • Must have skills of Firefighting, Gases and Vapours
  • Administration Skills and people supervision are essential.
COMPETENCIES:
  • Knowledge of Standards and procedures is essential.
  • Must have knowledge of Underground Mining
  • Must have knowledge of Risk Assessment
  • Computer Skills (MS Office: Excel, Word, Power point, Outlook) is essential.
  • Basic health and safety skills is essential.
  • Must have skills of Firefighting, Gases and Vapours
  • Administration Skills and people supervision are essential.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
  • To ensure compliance with the legal requirements in respect of Health, Safety and Environment as specified in the Minerals & Regulations and the Mine Health Safety Act
  • To assist with conducting Issue, baseline and continuous Risk Assessment, hazards identification and monitoring risk assessments in the workplace.
  • To ensure that safety audits/critical area inspections are conducted, and remedial actions are implemented.
  • To ensure proper reporting and investigations on workplace incidents and implementation of remedial actions.
  • To analyse and report on Safety statistics and propose and implement initiatives to reach safety targets.
  • To monitor and make recommendations on the application of health and safety principles regarding all equipment/ machinery, hazardous substances in the working place.
  • To advice on the safety principles pertaining to sources of mechanical/electrical energy and to non-mechanical/non-electrical sources of energy, and on application of safety and health principles regarding electricity in workplace.
  • To advice using given methodology, perform on the job coaching to enhance individual performance in the work environment.
  • To communicate safety milestones, best practices and monitor compliance to platinum rules.
  • To conduct legal compliance meetings with the Safety Reps and employees
