The Senior Assistant Controller role (SAC) is part of the Controllership team committed to giving financial support services to Marsh, Guy Carpenter, Mercer and Oliver Wyman MMC Operating companies in South Africa.
The SAC will oversee all aspects of the US and local statutory accounting and financial reporting in line with USGAAP and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and other local regulatory/statutory requirements. They will help drive process improvements and ensure strict financial controls are adhered to in line with MMC policies and procedures.
The Senior Assistant Controller will supervise and manage the controllership team and work closely with Accounting and Fiduciary Operations, FP&A, business leaders and other key stakeholders.
A successful candidate is a person with strong technical accounting, collaboration and project management skills. The role requires the ability to have an outstanding attention to detail.

Ensure that all internal and external reporting deadlines are met:
- Timely submission of all MMC US reporting requirements
- Timely preparation of financial statements in line with local statutory requirements (IFRS, Companies Act etc.)
- Timely submission of audited annual financial statements to the Financial Services Board or similar regulatory bodies for regulated entities.
- Accurate and timely submission of tax returns to local tax authorities
- Timely submission of internal Marsh reporting requirements (Board packs etc.)
- Timely submission of other reporting requirements (Statistics SA, Reserve bank etc.)
- Ensure deadlines for all audit deliverables are met.
- Review statutory journals, IFRS trial balances and audit schedules
- Prepare accounting and technical memos
- Oversee preparation and review of statutory tax for all entities
- Ensure all audit queries are addressed timeously.
- Ensure that all tax accounts are reconciled to SARS statements on a monthly basis
- Oversee preparation of tax returns (provisional and final)
- Oversee preparation of monthly VAT returns and reconciliations
- Oversee T14SD preparation
- Manage SARS tax audits and respond to all tax queries timeously
- Oversee preparation of US tax reporting One Source , RTP , Fin 48 and US tax packages
- Perform regular process and control reviews and ensure controls are in line with MMC policies
- Ensure remediation of Audit findings
- Update MMC annual exemptions requests
- Oversee the preparation of annual Transfer Pricing Documentation
- Assist with internal and SOX audits.
- Assist with preparation of the Audit committee controllership report
- Perform Income statement and balance sheet analytics and commentary for flash reporting
- Review balance sheet Reconciliations
- Review Debtors ageing
- FX Review and Hedging Submission
- Assist with ad-hoc finance projects including mergers and acquisitions.
- Building knowledge and staying up to date with the local statutory requirements and new standards.
- Provide cover for other members of the finance team where necessary
- Assist other members of offshore finance teams as required
- Experience of IFRS and US GAAP
- Qualified CA , ACCA or CIMA
- BCom. and completed articles
- Understanding of OneSource tax system
- Understanding of the Insurance Broking Industry and Regulations
- Working knowledge of Caseware working papers
- Understanding of tax regulations and processes
- Relevant exposure to financial reporting function gained by working in a finance environment.
- Exposure to balance sheet reporting
- Excellent IT Skills (including Excel and Word)
- Ability to prioritize, work to tight deadlines and deliver results to short timescales.
- Ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-location environment
- Ability to maintain clear lines of communication with various internal and external stakeholders
- Accuracy with good attention to detail and ability to check work of self and others
- Flexible and team player develops close partnerships with onshore and offshore colleagues

- Proven track record of exceeding expectations in previous roles.
