Our client is looking for a Senior Dairy Farm Manager to join their team with immediate effect.
Job Description
Tasks and Outputs will include, but not be limited to:
- Plans, develops, and implements policies, procedures, and practices for operation of dairy farm to ensure compliance with company’s or owner’s standards for farm production, propagation of herd, and regulations of regulatory agencies.
- Supervising milking routine, general hygiene and orderliness of work area, Mastitis detection and treatment, animal husbandry wrt. sick animals, vaccinations of the milk herd, pre- and post- calving treatments that are necessary.
- Directs and coordinates, through subordinate supervisory personnel, farm activities, for example breeding and rearing livestock, feeding and milking of cows, storage of milk, and sterilizing and maintaining facilities and equipment.
- Reviews breeding and milk production records to determine bulls and cows that are unproductive and should be sold.
- Inspects facilities and equipment to ensure compliance with sanitation standards, and to determine maintenance and repair requirements.
- Dairy Machine R&M (or at least the ability to pick up if there is something on the machine that requires attention).
- Authorizes, requisitions, or purchases supplies and equipment, for example feed, disinfective and sanitation chemicals, and replacements for defective equipment.
- Secures services of Veterinarian for treatment of herd or when cows are calving.
- Prepares farm activity reports for evaluation by management or owner.
- As and when required, may direct and coordinate activities regarding planting, growing, harvesting, and storage of feed forage crops.
- Directly supervise dairy workers on small farms.
- Clerical and administrative job duties, like drawing up budget plans and maintaining records of day-to-day operations.
- Personnel evaluations and personnel training.
Minimum Competence, Qualification and Experiential Requirements
- Agricultural Diploma/Degree not a must, but could be advantageous
- Min of 5 – 7 years previous dairy farming experience is a must
- Pasture experience will be beneficial
- Irrigation experience will be beneficial
- Computer literate
- Ability to speak Xhosa will be advantageous
- Must be personable, approachable and with high integrity
