Job Description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The main purpose of this position is to assist the Director of the School of Applied Health Sciences and to assist the Senior Laboratory Technician in the day-to-day running of the Physiology practical laboratories.

The Successful Candidate Will Be Required To/responsible For
  • Report to work at 07:30 on the days when a practical is taking place.
  • Courier & Ad-Hoc.
  • Check in with the Director and the secretary to find out if any tasks need to be completed for the day.
  • Delivery and collection of the mail and packages if necessary.
  • Oversee cleaners when they clean the laboratory.
Key Responsibilities

Lab support (Lab preparation) including:
  • Ensure that all reagents and apparatus have been prepared by the senior lab technician and is available for the upcoming practical.
  • Collect, label and store reagents accurately, maintaining detailed records.
  • Clear up stations and labs from the previous days practical sessions.
  • Wash lab apparatus in the dishwasher when required.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and neat lab.
  • Sanitize all table tops and surfaces when necessary.
  • Pack out apparatus/lab stations for upcoming practical sessions and ensure that labs are prepared for the next day before leaving work.
  • Supervise and assist with the deep cleaning of the lab at the end of the semester.
  • Support and assist demonstrators during practical sessions.
Lab Support (Lab Inventory)
  • Managing and remove broken glassware.
  • Assist with record keeping of laboratory stock.
  • Timeously report and have discussions regarding ordering and replacement.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and plan servicing and calibration of instruments (in conjunction with Snr lab technician).
  • Assist with disposal of waste from labs.
Admin Support (Admin Responsibilities)
  • Assist with record keeping of student groups and missed practicals.
  • Implement and adhere to safety protocols (under supervision of the senior lab technician).
  • Collaborate with the senior lab technician and practical coordinator and lecturers to support ongoing practical experiment development.
Minimum Requirements
  • A Grade 12 (NQF level 4) with Biological Sciences/Natural Sciences as a subject.
  • 3 6 months exposure/experience with basic computer literacy.
ADDED ADVANTAGE
  • Health and Safety training as well as previous laboratory work experience is desirable.
Key Functional/ Technical Competencies
  • Preparing of laboratories.
  • Responsible for providing first aid and reporting health and safety related incidents.
  • Removal of chemical and medical waste.
  • Assist in stock taking.
  • Organisation of storerooms.
  • Any other tasks assigned by the line manager related to the main functions of the position.
