LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER (One post)

Professional Orientation (Primary focus: Tertiary Academic Skills and Practices)
The ENGAGE Programme (Engineering Augmenting Degree Programme) is an extended degree programme comprised of both mainstream and additional/developmental modules. Students follow a structured 5-year curriculum. Professional Orientation (JPO 110 and JPO 120) is offered over two semesters in the first year of the ENGAGE Programme. The two modules follow a project-based approach and are designed to develop and refine suitable Academic, IT, and university-level Reading and Writing practices for academic success within the School of Engineering at UP. A team-teaching approach is followed and combined with assisted and peer learning. This integrated approach in both the presentation and assessment of the modules provides students with initial exposure to the practices and knowledge required of an engineer in the real world. Teaching within the module comprises of three formal lectures (with two groups of approximately 100 students) once a week and three interactive discussion/application classes (with the same two groups). The two groups are made up of students from the nine engineering disciplines offered in the School of Engineering at UP.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to teaching and assessment within the modules as one of the lecturers in Professional Orientation (JPO 110 and JPO 120).
- The primary focus will be on the development and refinement of academic skills and practices and academic reading and writing skills and practices for entry-level engineering students.
- Additionally, the successful candidate will be required to conduct research and publish in the fields of Engineering Education (focusing on the effective teaching and learning of students in extended degree programmes).
- Finally, the successful candidate will help to develop and refine the Professional Orientation curriculum in order to include new technologies and information.
Lecturer:
- Masters degree in Educational Psychology, Higher Education, Language Teaching, Engineering Education, or equivalent;
- Appropriate tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate levels;
- Ability to conduct and publish research;
- Supervision of Masters students.
- Doctorate degree in Educational Psychology, Higher Education, Language Teaching, Engineering Education, or equivalent;
- A proven record of research experience supported by suitable publications;
- Supervision of Masters and PhD students;
- Appropriate tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
- Three years of teaching experience at a tertiary level.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES) :
Proven experience and expertise in the following:
- Research in Educational Psychology, Higher Education, Tertiary Language Teaching, or Engineering Education;
- Active teaching and learning strategies;
- Online/virtual teaching at a tertiary level;
- Above average IT knowledge and skills;
- Background in project management and teamwork in projects;
- Proven interest in support and development of students in extended degree programmes.
