The successful candidate will be appointed in the Department as a Senior Lecturer or Lecturer and will be appointed as a rotational HOD in line with the rotational HOD guideline for a 5-year period.
Head of Department (HOD)
1. HOD responsibility: The person should be eligible to be appointed as the rotating HOD and manage the department effectively and efficiently in line with the CPUT policies and procedures specifically but not limited to (i) academic project management; (ii) research management; (iii) HR and staff management; (iv) financial management; and (v) student management.

2. Teaching: The person must be able to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and produce prospective Maritime Studies and Marine Engineering graduates (1) are recognized by SAMSA and (2) able to advance to higher qualifications in these fields when available s.
3. Research: The person must be active in research, and successfully supervise undergraduate final year research projects; and postgraduate students.
JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE *
Minimum requirements (Head of Department)
- A Master's qualification in Maritime Studies, Marine Engineering, or related field. Preference will be given to candidates with a doctoral qualification or proof of registration for doctoral qualification.
- A minimum of 5 years experience at a senior level in a relevant industrial environment or 5 years higher education lecturing and research experience (3 of which must be as a Senior Lecturer or above; and 2 must include management experience related to the functions of an HOD i.e., academic management; curriculum development; quality assurance and accreditation processes; financial and HR management of a Department)
- .Research and supervision experience commensurate with the level of Senior Lecturer or above.
- A track record in research output in accredited journals.
- Preference will be given to candidates registered with the South African Maritime Safety Authority and that have been involved in SAMSA accreditation processes both internally and externally.
- A doctoral qualification in Maritime Studies, Marine Engineering, or related field.
- .At least 4 years lecturing experience at the higher education level or 4 years related industry experience at thesenior level or a combination of the two.
- .Demonstrable evidence of publications (peer reviewed) in the Maritime, Marine Engineering, or related field
- .Track record of successful postgraduate supervision
- .Evidence of appropriate academic and research leadership.
- Seagoing Certificate of Competency Class 1 or Class 2
Recommendation:
- Preference will be given to candidates registered with the South African Maritime Safety Authority and that have been involved in accreditation processes both internally and externally.
- A Masters qualification in Maritime Studies, Marine Engineering, or related field.
- At least 2 years lecturing experience at the higher education level or 2 years related industry experience or a combination of the two.
- Seagoing Certificate of Competency Class 1 or Class 2 or Class 3 (plus 12 months serving as Officer of the Watch applicable to Class 3 holders only)
