Senior Network Engineer

Job Purpose

The Senior Network Engineer will be involved in configuring, maintaining and administrating the Cisco network and firewall solutions. The Senior Network Engineer will be involved with determining strategy and will also aid in the lifecycle management of all related technologies, from incubation to end of life planning. The role is also responsible for ensuring security and configuration compliance and will work with other IT System Engineering Team members.

Vendor management and internal client expectation management is also core to the role. As part of the responsibilities, the role will be tasked to respond to requests from end users, managers, developers, and team members for specific IT system assistance, data, and information. The Senior Network Engineer role collaborates with senior personnel in performing risk assessments to determine the impact on customer business processes and systems downtime and proposes changes as needed.

The Senior Network Engineer implements system changes across large, complex and diverse collaborative environments by using

standardised defined methods and procedures; provides efficient and prompt handling of all changes to improve day-to-day operations.

Responsibilities

Infrastructure and Network Development and Maintenance

Design and select medium complexity storage, data center, network, and client/ server environments to design solutions in line with industry best practice and provide a third-line point of escalation for appropriate organisational infrastructure solutions.

Design and implement network solutions that meet business requirements.

Troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues.

Proactively maintain and develop all network and firewall infrastructure technology to maintain a 24x7x365 uptime service.

Maintain best practices on managing systems and services across all environments.

Manage, coordinate, and implement software upgrades, patches, hot fixes on network hardware.

Plan and execute system fixes, updates, and enhancements.

Ensure system availability, functionality, integrity and efficiency, and maintain system configuration and documentation.

Enterprise Infrastructure Modernisation

Deliver digital solution architecture services as assigned, preparing conceptual and logical architecture diagrams to align technical direction and document future state architectures.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement new technologies.

Design and Conceptualisation

Produce multiple concepts and prototypes to design digital products/services.

Technical Developments Recommendation

Discuss and recommend technical developments to improve quality of the website/portal/applications software and supporting infrastructure to better meet users needs.

Engineering of systems administration-related solutions for various project and operational needs.

Optimise and maintain performance, housekeeping, availability, serviceability, and recovery.

Testing IT Performance

Design and perform website/applications software tests and respond to user emails to monitor, diagnose, and correct performance issues.

Monitor and maintain network performance, availability, and security.

Fault finding, analysis and of logging information for reporting of performance exceptions.

Proactively monitoring system performance and capacity planning.

Ownership and execution of incident management and system maintenance.

Business Requirements Identification

Collect business requirements using a variety of methods such as interviews, document analysis, workshops, and workflow analysis to express the requirements in terms of target user roles and goals.

Develop and maintain network documentation and diagrams.

Horizon Scanning

Explore and develop a detailed understanding of external developments or emerging issues and contribute to the evaluation of their potential impact on, or usefulness to, the organisation.

Provide input on ways to improve the stability, security, efficiency, and scalability of the environment.

Information Security

Implement and provide input on the design of required security measures such as firewalls or message encryption, monitoring performance to notify security experts of any problems.

Implement security procedures, as directed by security team.

Capability Building

Develop own capabilities by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching; gain or maintain external professional accreditation where relevant to improve performance and fulfill personal potential.

Maintain an in-depth understanding of technology, external regulation, and industry best practices through ongoing education, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.

Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members.

Stakeholder Engagement

Develop stakeholder engagement through identifying stakeholders, finding out their needs/issues/concerns and reacting to these to support the communication of business information and decisions.

Collaborate with other teams and team members to develop automation strategies and deployment processes.

Project Management

Manage a portfolio of projects while reporting to senior colleagues.

Supplier Management

Maintain day-to-day contact with business-critical suppliers and respond to complex incidents with suppliers or supplies/services to analyse performance and provide feedback on key supplier management indicators.

Education

Matric / Grade 12/ SAQA Accredited (Essential); Relevant accredited testing certification (Advantageous); Relevant IT degree / diploma (Advantageous)

Experience

10 to 15 years experience in Cisco product line (Essential); In-depth knowledge of all Cisco products (Essential); Hands-on experience with Cisco switching and routing protocols (Essential); Familiarity with WiFi, SD-WAN and ACi management and concepts (Essential); Prior customer service or support experience (Essential); Proven track record of determining critical procedures within the existing environment and automate deployment and upgrades (Essential); Able to provide effective work support off-hours as required, including weekends, holidays, and 24/7 on call responsibilities on a rotational basis (Essential).
