SENIOR SYSTEMS ANALYST AND DEVELOPER

(PEOPLESOFT: CAMPUS SOLUTIONS SUITE - TWO POSTS), (PEOPLESOFT: HCM SUITE - ONE POST)

Job Purpose
  • Take the lead in effective planning, design, development, implementation, integration, support and upgrade of solutions for addressing business requirements related to specific modules within one or more of the institutions PeopleSoft suites of applications which include PeopleSoft Campus Solutions (CS); PeopleSoft Human Capital Management (HCM); PeopleSoft Financials and Supply Chain and PeopleSoft Customer Relationship Management (CRM);
  • Ensuring these systems are maintained and operated according to appropriate policies, standards and procedures including those relating to system development, system documentation and change control;
  • Oversee support on the implemented solutions;
  • With other Senior Business Systems Analyst/Developers, lead and coordinate the upgrade and maintenance of the implemented modules in the assigned PeopleSoft suite(s);
  • Mentor and/or manage less senior PeopleSoft System Analysts/Developers in the installation, maintenance and configuration of the assigned PeopleSoft suite(s) in particular and across all PeopleSoft suites in general.
It is important to note that the job comprises both development and maintenance/support roles. The dominant role at any given point in time will be determined by operational requirements.

Responsibilities

The successful candidates responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Configuration, customisation, development, integration and testing of relevant PeopleSoft modules:
  • System configuration and design:
    • Interact with key system stakeholders to:
      • Understand current business needs, processes, procedures, policies, and/or problems in specific business domains;
      • Gather and document stakeholder requirements, concerns and problem areas, and model potential improved business processes;
    • Assist functional users in translating business needs into functional specifications and in formulating the business case for undertaking desired developments, enhancements and/or customisations;
    • Analyse the needs/problems investigated and functional specifications and formulate alternative possible solutions to address these needs, and t ranslate functional specifications into technical designs and/or system configuration;
  • Layout and design of files where system customisations/extensions are required:
    • Identify the desired data objects. Do data normalisation and identify key fields;
    • Perform data file design of new data files and/or changes to existing data files;
    • Create conceptual data files, in consultation with the database administrators, and discuss changes to data files as well as creating new layouts for data files, with database administrators;
  • Programming:
    • Define development milestones;
    • Code the programs by using the relevant particular programming language;
    • Develop the necessary system integration interfaces, as specified and as needed. Implement the necessary system changes and adjustments, so as to address the errors and changes that have been identified and/or specified;
  • System testing and preparation for migration:
    • Define testing milestones;
    • During the system configuration, development and/or customisation, do the necessary system testing and/or system unit testing to:
      • Check that the outcome corresponds with the specifications for the relevant system development or system change;
      • Ensure that the integration between the programs is correct and that it is executed correctly as a unit. Develop system interfaces which comply with the principles of best practice for system integration;
    • Assist functional users with functional testing - including compilation of testing scenarios and test data, and recording of issues encountered during testing;
  • User Support:
    • Provide support to functional leads with regard to applications functioning in the specific PeopleSoft business domains in which the incumbent is competent;
    • Assist where possible in the development of relevant end-user training material, and, where requested, in the actual training of end-users;
    • Transfer knowledge to other UP staff involved in the management and deployment of these PeopleSoft systems;
    • Perform day-to-day system administrative functions, resolving and preventing problems, and generally ensuring that previously defined/required processes continue to function;
    • Analyse trends in user reported system errors and update users on anticipated time to resolution;
  • Team Management:
    • Provide guidance and mentorship to other team members in respect of their individual performance and ensure that team members are optimally productive;
    • Ensure that mechanisms and procedures are put in place in order to ensure that the broader PeopleSoft team's activities comply with the agreed-on architecture, standards, methodologies and applicable work procedures;
    • Where subordinates are managed, implement efficient performance management to ensure that performance of the individual team members contributes positively to the teams performance;
    • Facilitate regular meetings with other team members and relevant stakeholders to ensure that milestones are met, and planned activities are completed successfully and in time;
    • Ensure appropriate system documentation is prepared and maintained and oversee configuration, monitoring and tuning of the implemented solutions
    • Monitor and research new technologies, tools, and techniques to address business requirements;
  • System Implementation:
    • Define implementation milestones; prepare an implementation plan documenting the steps in the deployment process and projects to be migrated, tables to be built, etc, and coordinate the actions of the various parties in deploying to Production;
    • Assist functional users in configuring (and maintaining configuration of) the relevant PeopleSoft applications, and offer the necessary support in respect of users' access to the respective system functions and post-deployment support;
    • Arrange for and obtain confirmation from users that implementation was successful;
  • System Maintenance and Upgrades:
    • Monitor releases of patches, bundles and maintenance packs and new versions issued by Oracle (of relevance to the domain being managed);
    • Provide technical guidance to colleagues, team members, and system administrators regarding bundles and upgrades;
    • Investigate feasible cutover/transition strategies to ensure business continuity during upgrades;
    • Advise management on feasible alternatives and/or changes to existing architecture, infrastructure and/or strategies which will be in best interest of the University to establish a well governed and managed suite of PeopleSoft applications.
Minimum Requirements
  • A relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. B.Sc., B.Comm Informatics, B. Eng.), with:
  • A total of five years experience in the following:
    • Installing and maintaining PeopleSoft ERP systems (preferably in the PeopleSoft suite associated with the domain in which the vacancy exists) with demonstrable capabilities in PeopleTools technologies (Application Designer, PeopleSoft Applications Engines, PeopleSoft Application Packages, PeopleSoft EIPs, SQR, PeopleSoft Pivot Grids, PeopleSoft Excel_to_CI; PeopleSoft FLUID designer, PeopleSoft Query, Oracle BI Publisher);
    • Design; development, deployment and maintenance of large enterprise (ERP) systems;
    • Business application trouble-shooting and problem resolution;
    • Working with users and providing user support;
OR
  • Applicable three years IT related Diploma (e.g. National Diploma Computer Science, Diploma in Information Technology), with:
  • A total of seven years experience in the following:
    • Installing and maintaining PeopleSoft ERP systems (preferably in the PeopleSoft suite associated with the domain in which the vacancy exists) with demonstrable capabilities in PeopleTools technologies (Application Designer, PeopleSoft Applications Engines, PeopleSoft Application Packages, PeopleSoft EIPs, SQR, PeopleSoft Pivot Grids, PeopleSoft Excel_to_CI; PeopleSoft FLUID designer, PeopleSoft Query, Oracle BI Publisher);
    • Design; development, deployment and maintenance of large enterprise (ERP) systems;
    • Business application trouble-shooting and problem resolution;
    • Working with users and providing user support.

  • Knowledge:
    • Insight into the functionality of PeopleSoft ERP suites in the domain in which the vacancy exists (viz. Campus Solutions and/or Human Capital Management and/or Financials and Supply Chain and/or CRM);

      • Investigate new technologies and methodologies;
      • Mentor subordinates; share knowledge and assist with personal development of colleagues .

    • Appropriate PeopleSoft development tools, e.g. Application Designer, PeopleCode, PS Query, SQR and Web Services and PeopleSoft Reporting Tools;

  • A total of three years experience in:
    • Tertiary education or similar environment;
    • The PeopleSoft suite associated with the domain in which the vacancy exists, and experience in the implementation of components of this specific suite;
    • Loading PeopleSoft patches and undertaking PeopleSoft version upgrades;
    • Integrating applications using various system integration technologies;
    • Leading a technical system development team and/or mentoring of other development team members;
  • Valid drivers licence.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbents level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
